Worth Getting Nintendo Switch?

Hey Guys,

For as long as I can remember I have been a gamer and have appreciated all things alike in the industry. As of late I've predominantly been playing my PS4 in my spare time as I'm fairly picky when it comes to titles. I like my Open World RPG's (Horizon Zero Dawn, FFXV and Fallout 4 just to name a few) and am a sports fanatic and pretty much play them all.

I recently attended a social gathering and the Nintendo Switch was all the craze. Mario Kart 8 being played Multiplayer, 1, 2, Switch and various others being smashed out also. I have previously owned a PS Vita and Nintendo 3DS but fell out of those as there weren't many top notch titles worth playing (besides Pokémon and the occasional JRPG).

Does anyone own a Switch that has been in this position before? Is the hardware worth it for this price?

Fingers crossed at E3 they reveal more AAA Titles launching on Switch.

spend the money and invest in ETH

  • Don't trust Nintendo.

    • I will be reluctant to give them all my trust. To be honest, if FIFA 2018 releases and it isn't just like the VITA ports they have done, even that alone would tempt me.

I like my Open World RPG's

I think you'll like Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Is the hardware worth it for this price?

You get it to play Nintendo exclusives.

    • I've seen my friends play BOTW and it does look awesome to be fair.

So if I'm not playing most of the exclusives, avoid?

I think it's the best one yet

So if I'm not playing most of the exclusives, avoid?

Why else would you get it if you can play the games on other platforms? I mean, the portability is nice, but better to play on a large tv.

Pro-tip: Borrow a friends WiiU, play Zelda BotW, get your fix and then return the Wii U. Wait three years and then buy a secondhand Switch (in "as new" condition) after it finally has enough first party Nintendo content to warrant a purchase at a bargain price off of eBay.

As a hardcore gamer of 37 years of age: being an early adopter is never an intelligent financial (or good entertainment) proposition. Always wait a minimum of 18 months before jumping into a new platform. You can hate me all you want, but you all know that I'm right :)

That's why people rather spend a bit more. They don't want to wait 18 months….moreso if their friends are playing it today.

He is right…. unless the platform is PC Gaming.
Since you can build a competent rig today (r5-1600, GTX 1070)… and it'll play all current titles, some exclusive titles, and a shipload of back-catalogue.
Not to mention emulators, for anything from Atari to Wii. (Wii U and PS3 emulators also Work in Progress).
And it'll remain valid for a LOONG time as an Entertainment source, compared to consoles.

The only point of getting consoles are for the Exclusive Games (Pokemon, Mario, Zelda, Crash, Uncharted, TLOU, Horizon, Cuphead, Halo, Forza, etc etc)

      • +4

Hard to take a GTX 1070 on the bus.

        • Acer Triton 700 ?
          Aorus X5 v6 ?
          Gigabyte P35X v6 ?

          …or go the other/mobile way….
          GPD Win?
          GPD XD?
          JXD Singularity?
          Nvidia Shield Console?
iPad Mini 4, with a controller?
          iPhone SE, with a controller?

          @Kangal:
I have no beef in this game, happily playing Gameboy and DS titles when I occasionally game, but the Switch is pretty unique at what it delivers for the price.
And in a few years I'll likely get one!

        • @mskeggs:
I have beef in this course, because Nintendo could've delivered a fantastic product but instead we got this…

Nintendo doesn't care about mskeggs or the consumer.
They care about making a Billion this year, and hoping the whole industry comes to a screeching halt next year so they don't look obsolete.

Yes, it's not really about futuristic technology, but rather "fun".
But Nintendo has screwed 3rd party publishers for a decade now by using software/hardware that was cut-down making the process of porting titles cumbersome and unworthy for the majority of the industry. That reduces competition which in turn hurts everybody.

PC gaming is always the best gaming investment (even more so this gen). Not everyone wants to get their hands "dirty" though sadly. But I can understand why; it can be a pain in the ass when your personal time is ultra limited and not focused on self-entertainment. I like to take the burden upon myself for friends though and build all of their rigs myself (as well as solve all of their technical issues). Sadly, I'm the only on that isn't married - LOL.

Its main selling point is its a hybrid console - that is play on the go and at home. Would you take advantage of this?
It also has exclusives, do you think you'll enjoy the Nintendo exclusives?
It does seem to have pretty good third-party support at the moment but it lacks in power compared to Sony and Microsoft so may not offer the best experience.
Again though its a hybrid so its portability is a trade off for power so you have to ask yourself, are you planning to game on the go?

    • No one ever buys nintendo consoles because it's powerful

      • They used to back in the day of the NES, SNES, N64, and the GameBoy Color.
The GameCube and GameBoy Advance were "alright" for their time… but clearly outspec'd by the competition that was the Xbox and PSP.

And with the extra prolongation of last-gen consoles (360/PS3/Wii U) and the underwhelming performance of their predecessors (XB1/PS4)… Nintendo CLEARLY missed a Golden Opportunity with the Switch. They could've put XB1-level performance into the Switch for a bit more money… but they instead spent their time on marketing and gimmicks. Third-Party publishers actually are NOT happy with the Switch's meager specifications. And these specs are stuck on this ecosystem for a good 4 years, the Xbox Scorpio will make it look like a joke.

        • +2

the Xbox Scorpio will make it look like a joke.

But PCs make all consoles look like a joke, and it doesn't stop them from moving units. People are willing to pay a premium for inferior technology in order to play with friends and access exclusive titles.

        • @airal3rt:
You can already get better performance and play with friends on either desktop or mobile.
Go the route of iOS/Android or Windows/Steam…. no need to rely on a PS Vita, XB1 or NSwitch.

As I commented above, the only reason worth getting a console anymore is for exclusive titles.
And that might disappear soon, if SONY decides to migrate "PlayStation" as an ecosystem for Computers/Embedded like Microsoft is doing with its Xbox ecosystem.

Companies are figuring out its better/profitable to lock down consumers via a software ecosystem rather than a hardware platform.

        • The Nintendo company only ever made powerful systems to advance gaming with new ideas/genres e.g. 3d gaming. They might have advertised some specs, but it was just for some of their marketing stuff at the time. Wii U was with the Xb1/PS4 gen. Switch is the new one, unless gens are dead which they might be now….

Gaming hit a wall with the 360/ps3/wii were visual leaps per generation were not as drastically noticeable, and by Xb1/PS4 you get less of the wow like before, plus it doesnt really move gaming forward anymore with new gameplay ideas, so much repetition from the big budget companies and genres. Why we get stuck with vanilla rehashed controllers at times.

Incremental mid gen upgrades are there to squeeze money out of current consumers, these systems are they're not selling as well as they would like too. They ship the mid ones to pump up numbers, 3ds spin off outside of the slim ones included….

If the industry crashes, which it might, part of it will be due to the over obsession with powerful systems. Alot of companies went under during the 360/ps3/wii era, making high end games that didn't make enough money on ps3/xbox 360. These games struggle to run and now these systems require installs (minus the Nintendo ones)…

Part of the reason there are alot more indie games now and less big budget (with more online only multiplayer games as a service) is due to money issues. Making big games for Xb1/PS4 is more expensive then the 360/PS3 and it requires more manpower too. And that was very expensive already. When a game is rushed out now its very noticeable when there are issues.

Nintendo not getting big 3rd company publishers on Switch currently yet isn't to do with specs, has everything to do with the other 2 companies money hatting for exclusive deals, e.g. paying companies to put their games on platforms, exclusive content/dlc. Companies like Sony pressure those companies too keep their games off the Nintendo ones. Nintendo games are also seen/treated as higher quality games within the industry, thus they are also seen as competition on the same platform for other companies, though the "competition" aspect is something of a myth. Such games release with bugs, problems on other platforms and can generally still do well. Xbox/PS very much need those companies.

As the install base goes up, companies will budge and release more on Switch, its already happening.

Lets hope gaming doesnt crash further, would be nice to see more game companies in the future, rather then less. Maybe Atari, who knows.

  • there wont be a price reduction as units are shipping well. just get it now if there is specific content you want to play. wait if you can because of model updates like better battery life, fixes to flimsy attachments.

I got one at launch because I'm a complete Nintendo fanboy (although I didn't get the WiiU for a year after it was out and it still gathered dust).

Having said that, I genuinely love the Switch and it's brought joy back into gaming for me. The things that work for me:

    • Portability: I can play it on the bus, in bed, on the lounge and then in a second I dock it and I'm on the TV. I probably use it 90% plus undocked.

    • Bringing gaming to places: I play it on the bus so it was sitting on my desk in its case at work. People kept asking about it, I'd let them have a go, and then we'd be playing Snipperclips or Mario Kart together. It's brought the spontaneity back to gaming for me.

    • Nintendo first party games: Zelda is a masterpiece. Mario Kart is a time sink and brilliant to play with those not into gaming (bloody blue shells). And Arms, Mario and Splatoon all look like they'll be a world of fun.

Is the Switch as powerful as my PC? Not even close. But since getting the Switch I've played it heaps more because it fits in with me. If I have 10 mins spare I can grab it, hit power and within seconds I'm playing my game. No fuss. A quick car ride? Bring it along. Have to wait somewhere for 30 mins? Switch time. It's finally gaming on the go that feels right.

I bought the Switch because I'm a Nintendo geek, but I haven't loved a console like this since the N64 - it feels that fresh and different. It's making me appreciate games and gaming again in a way I haven't for years. For me it was totally worth the money and several of those at work who had a play have since got them too.

Since getting it both my PC and 3DS XL have been gathering dust. And honestly I don't see the novelty wearing off too soon, it's just so damn convenient.

Surely gaming whilst driving has to be worse than texting whilst driving.

I bought the switch on day 1 and have had no regrets whatsoever. The portability aspect really is amazing and you can take it anywhere with you and play a number of 2 player games with anyone using the two joycons. I have to admit that the number of titles are lacking at the moment with only BOTW and MK8D being the must buys (IMO anyway) but a bunch of other titles are on its way (Splatoon 2, arms, Xenoblade to name a few).

Even though I've got infinitely more games on my PC than on my switch, I still prefer the switch most of the time because I can game while lying down.

If you like Horizon Dawn and FF XV, I think you'd enjoy Zelda BotW very much.

I think of gaming as an entertainment substitute. How much do you spend on Netflix, movies, going out drinks, parties, etc? If they are around $100, and the Switch can keep you at home for 5 months, then the $500 purchase price is justifiable.

I've been staying home in the past 2 months and saved a bit of money just because I love spending time in BotW, I just can't get enough of their puzzles, and even just talking about BotW itself in the forums with everyone else. I think when I buy Mario Kart it'll also keep me on the TV for a while. I can also ask my friend to come over instead of going out partying.

Having said that, I'm a big introvert who don't enjoy going out as much as some people.

Did you watch the Mario Odyssey trailer? If you throw his hat on the dinosaur, you get to become a dinosaur!

    Buy a Switch!

  • Yes absolutely, the system is worth it, very much. But you decide for you though. Brings me back to the enthusiasm and positive gaming the Wii inspired, but with new ideas too.
Its great to play on tv, tabletop, handheld, Joy Cons are very versatile, great for built in 2 player gaming. Barely need the dock currently, 1 jc in each hand is fine…

1 2 Switch is a blast, some of the best local multiplayer ive played, and some of the games can be played/practiced as single player. HD rumble games are fun too.

Bomberman, Zelda BOTW, ARMS, Snipperclips, Blaster Master Zero, Snake Pass, Puyo Puyo Tetris, NBA Playgrounds, Shantae, Frontier Days, Mighty Gunvolt Burst, Mr. Shifty, are great too. Nice top of the line exclusives and some great multisystem games as well, the 3rd company independent games are quite good.

Fast Racing RMX apparently has "remixed versions" of past tracks and new tracks/ vehicles, still trying to figure out how different it really is to Wii U one…

Theres also alot of free Demos for games, plus its region free so you can get free demos/ games from the other region eshops should you want too.

You'll get alot of console war posting from your post probably, given alot of ultra fans of other platforms lurk on the site, but the system is top notch! As a multisystem video game fan, i have enjoyed very much as a play anywhere system. Obviously it is expensive, but video gaming is an expensive hobby.

Obviously there is more to play if you have Xbox One, Wii U, and or 3ds, but its off to a nice start considering! Also alot coming as seen in there E3/Direct Youtube vids. (Splatoon2, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Mario Odyssey, Mario and Rabbids Kingdom Battle, etc)

  • More games and a price cut please!

  • I own all of the consoles, love my PS4 Pro, I use the Xbone S for the MS exclusives and I'm pretty much only playing Switch for the past 3 months. Arms is amazingly good fun btw.

  • Mario Odyssey for sure
