Sturdy Chest of Drawers (Furniture in Sydney)

Any recommendations of places in Sydney to buy drawers at Ozbargain prices? New or second hand is ok. (Yes, I know things come up at auctions and garage same I'm looking for other suggestions.)

Will be used in cupboards, garages etc so finish is not important, but sturdiness is. Drawers must be able to cope with being overfilled from time to time by children! Runners could be strong metal or just wooden as long as they'll last.

  • Where there are children around where something is top heavy and potentially with the added weight of a toddler using the drawers as stepping ladders, even the most sturdy drawers can become dangerous.

It is generally advised that such drawers or cabinets be secured to the wall.

If you want to be super cheap about it, IKEA (in WA anyway) offer free kits to secure their cabinets to walls, which can be used on virtually any cabinets. You just need a drill set.

  • Which ever you end up getting, check under the drawers to see if there is reinforcing in the centre (ie metal bar or wood plank running from front to back) to stop the drawer from caving in.
Most new ikea have these but older ones will not - it is possible to add these yourself if you are handy with tools

  • Check Facebook groups such as buy or sell pages. There are plenty of items that you are looking for. Mostly 2nd hand and will be dirt cheap.

  • If you don't want to go second hand then i reckon IKEA is a safe bet. E.g. http://m.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/art/30221420/

Or there should be similar untreated pine stuff available from local discount furniture places. I know of some in melb but not Sydney sorry.

  • If you want a sturdy chest of drawers, you should buy solid wood. It looks nicer obviously and is much dearer but for a playroom for kids, it is the best thing.

  • Thanks for all your comments. Other than Ikea (not in my area) any suggestions for particular shops? Preferably near the city (so inner west, eastern suburbs ok).
