How safe is Aliexpress payments (possible credit card compromise)?

Was trying to pay for some stuff on Aliexpress yesterday as I have done plenty of times before but the payment process wouldn't complete. This morning I noticed an unauthorised payment on my card for $1400 to 'viator tripadviser'. Needless to say I called the bank immediately and got the card cancelled. For most purchases I use paypal but Aliexpress only accepts credit cards and I haven't used that card anywhere else online. Apparently tripadviser's database was hacked back in 2014 but as I didn't have that card back then and as I have had NO dealing with them at all I don't think that was the cause of the fraud.

So has anyone else had any suspicious payment on their card after using aliexpress? (or am I just lucky?)

I've been using it for 6 years and with ~700 purchases and never had an issue. Alipay/aliexpress/alibaba is a huge corporation (larger than amazon).

I'd confidently say the leak was from elsewhere.

Have you ever bought stuff from a chemist online (there were a number of reports here 6 months ago about dodgy CC transaction that may have been from there.

Yeah it's possible I guess, the Mrs was using it on a couple of sites last weekend so maybe one of those has been compromised? I thought it just looked a bit sus given that Aliexpress payments wouldn't go through yesterday (or today before I cancelled the card). Have scanned PC for viruses/malware etc as well. :) Have bought stuff from online chemists (I think ) but would have used payal and there are no unauthorised payments on PP as of this morning. Anyway, one of those things I guess, been shopping online since the mid 90's and this is the first problem I've had.

you know what, being its an asian site, i was always reluctant for many years….since last year, i've done many transactions and i can say after sales service is the best I've ever seen. you are more than covered and if the supplier doesnt reply to you, Aliexpress ahve a 24/7 chat which are always helpful

I used a card on aliexpress to buy a redmi 3s. A few months later got a call from the bank saying someone tried using my card on a few different websites. Aliexpress was the only site i typed in that card's details.

Edit: Hmmm reading previous comments i did purchase something from a chemist deal.

If you purchased from Discount Drug Stores, that would most likely be the reason. See here.

Aus post sell the Alipay vouchers, that way you don't need to give them your CC details. I use them all the time.

    • Cool, I didn't know that. :)

      • Many staff doesn't know either. Keep pushing them to look and its in the system lol
