Finding New Energy Provider- What to Consider (Help)

I'm sure this has been talked to death but I just wanted an opinon on power providers.
update- I'm sticking AGL, they offerred me 16% off as opposed to the 10%. Which makes them even with Energy australia, except I can link my flybuys and stay with the same company
Queensland :)

I'm looking at AGL price sheet here who offers 10% off
I had 18% off before :(
Click energy price sheet here 18% off
Energy Australia price sheet here 16% off

With a power usage of 1980kWh I've figured Energy Australia wins $25ish when taking into consideration kWh and supply charge, I am missing anything?
Calculations below discount only on kWh, I did it all inclusive of GST which I know isn't correct however GST is the same everywhere is it not

Cheers guys

AGL
Supply charge 89x $1.08361= $96.44129
Kilowat hours 1980x $0.27071= $536.0058
Discount $96.44129 + $482 = $578 (10% off kWh)

Click
Supply charge 89x $1.34473= $119.68097
Kilowat hours 1980x $0.28035= $555.093
Discount $119.681 + $455.176 =$574.86 (18% off)

energy australia
Total supply charge 89x $1.287= $114.543
Kilowat hours 1980x $0.26= $514.4436
Discount $114.543+$432.13=$546.67 (16% off)

You forgot to risk model for rate changes respective to providers

It's so much effort to compare and do the math on each plan and each company. For me I signed a two year fixed contract (which apparently isn't really fixed) with one company. Looking at the current offers with the same company, even though they offer slightly higher percentage discounts, the service fees and rates have gone up!

Would have to sit and calculate all the other plans from all the other providers to see if any savings could be made, and cynical me thinks it would be minimal at best, so why bother.

  • I am missing anything?

You might have to redo your calculations, the discounts are only on the usage charges before GST and not the supply charge or GST.

So usage charge minus discount then add supply charge then add GST.

  • I'm with AGL, was on a 20 something percent discount when paying on time and its been bumped up to 30 something now because I went to switch. There isnt much difference at all with prices between providers, privatisation was a farce

EDIT: I just realised a previous poster explained this :-) …

Please note, that is not how they calculate the % discount; that is from the total.

Usually they calculate the discount % ONLY from usage and NOT the supply charge.

    So basically,

    Total = Supply charge + (discount % x usage) = Total + GST

This is a rough guide however you have to check with individual Energy retailers on how it is calculated.

    Cheers

    • Thanks mate
Energy australia is still looking the best

  • If you are in Victoria and have a smart meter you can download your detailed usage and send it to the government comparator and get the optimum retailer.

  • Energy Australia had 24% off promo scheme in NSW recently. I am not sure if it is still on.

    • Any links?

  • Red energy is pretty good
