So we don't know what computer or laptop you have, or the Operating System you are running, whether you have an external keyboard or anything.

Sounds like your Keyboard Preferences are out.
Check your "Key Repeat" and "Delay until repeat" settings.

Check the Keyboard Battery if it has one.

    • I got the same problem for my Razer Blackwidow 2014 keyboard. When I hit A it sometimes hit twice or sometimes three times with one press.

  • When it gets unbbeaarrable change your keyboard. Or batteries. Or fingers.

  • this is helpful to have when writing content that has a word limit.

  • Type using cut and paste letters.

  • Use the onscreen keyboard - if that's doing it too then you most likely have malware.

    • malware like this is extremely uncommon. It's more like prankware / scareware if you ask me.

I remember back in school we'd use all types of prankware on the school PC's, ranging from ones that cause your CD-ROM drive to eject randomly, ones that make fake bluescreens appear and ones that insert profanity whenever you press a certain keystroke.

      • I get what you're saying but the term Malware is the general term used for such things as scareware, adware, prankware, ransomeware, viruses, worms, trojan horses etc etc.

        • LOL -reminds me of job I had - when I typed a certain phrase in Word it would change it to my Bosses Name :)

near flat batteries in a wireless keyboard??

    • its a laptop

Looks like your keyboard has bouncing issues, where a single keypress sometimes registers as multiple.

Could be faulty due to a variety of reasons, e.g did you spill any liquid, is there dust or gunk trapped inside, or keyboard cable is loose etc

though it could be software related. If you dual boot another operating system (like Linux on a Pen drive), try booting into another OS while ensuring you have the right keyboard selected (American layout) and see if the bug persists. If you get errors, you might need a new KB replacement.

      • Wwaarraannttyy!!??

  • There are many possible reasons why the keyboard is faulty. You did not provide much information about the laptop. You have a few options from cheap/easiest to expensive/difficult:
    1) Live with the faulty keyboard and use the virtual keyboard if it is a Windows laptop.
    2) Connect and use a USB keyboard.
    3) If the laptop has Bluetooth interface installed, get an external Bluetooth keyboard if you prefer wireless
    4) Try replacing the keyboard yourself - search and buy from eBay or AliExpress or other Chinese online retailer websites
    5) Send a laptop repair shop (this is easy unless the repair does not fix the problem but add more problems for you)
    6) Buy a new laptop

It is Saturday. Take it easy and enjoy the weekend for now.

    • Can you expands on replacing kB. Can you do that for any laptop?

      • First, replacing keyboard only works if the fault is with the keyboard or its integrated connection cable. If other components on the laptop is faulty, such as the keyboard encoder, etc, then replacing the keyboard is not going to solve the problem. So you have to decide whether is the cost of the replacement keyboard and spending your time to do it is worth it.

I do not know can it be done for ANY laptop but if you can find the replacement keyboard for the particular laptop from online retailers, then it is likely that you can replace the keyboard yourself. Of course you need to be technically competent in dismantling and assemblying the laptop - it is not rocket science and having the right tools help.

What is important is to find the keyboard (including country type/keys) for your particular laptop brand/model - not just similar laptop/brand. Here is high level search of "replacement keyboard" on Aliexpress: https://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale?catId=0&initiative_id=S…
Search or filter down to the brand/model that you need. Find on other online retailers such as eBay, Banggood, etc.

Depending on the laptop, some are easy to replace while others take more effort. Google for keyboard replacement instructions and hopefully there is instruction for the specific laptop otherwise a similar model of the laptop brand.
For example, here is a youtube on replacing the keyboard for a regular Dell 6400 laptop (old type/model): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JiDEjpW5i8 and is relatively easy.
Likewise the keyboard of 2-in-1 laptop such as Asus T100 Transformer Book can also be replaced. For this particular 2-in-1 laptop, there is only written instruction on replacing the keyboard for the specific model while there are youtube videos for similar models or on disassemblying this specific model.
Disconnect laptop from power source, remove the battery from laptop, try not to break any part when dis/assemblying and be very careful with any ribbon connector. PM me if you are planning to replace for a specific laptop but usual disclaimer applies and you proceed at your own risk.

  • Try clean it. Air compressor or something.
Pull the keys out for a deep clean.
    Otherwise get a nuw one

  • When I reformatted to windows 8 on my laptop, the @ button now doesnt work and shows up as a ' instead. very frustrating when the first thing you need to do to set up your laptop is to sign in your account!

    • That would most likely be a keyboard setting for another region other than English.

  • My magic eye tells me:
Someone has been eating and drinking (their OZ Bargain specials) while using their laptop.

But more than probably, moisture & dust, does get into it. No matter what precautions you take.
(Also, using the keyboard will break it, sooner or later.)!!!

    So… you DO have choices:…

    1. leep ysing it as is.

    2. Buy yourself a cheap $5 USB keyboard.

    3. Pay someone an exorbitant amount of money to rip it apart an replace it.

Are you emotionally connected to this laptop???
    4. If you know jack-5hit about the inside of a laptop, start pulling things apart, making sure to spread ALL the parts all over the place.

    THEN

    5. Buy a new one.

ALERT: If using option 2 and that fixes it. It is NOT a software issue

  • I appreciate all the help you guys have given, however now it doesn't turn on so I will go to a different option

Just wait till Monday morning. The lovely people from Microsift Office Supports Department will call you, telling you that they can see evidence that your computer has been affected by malicious Internet hackers and that for a modest fee they will be able to assist you.

As far as keyboard wear goes? Unpossible. Keyboards don't wear out. I've been using the same Compaq PS/2 keyboard since 1996 and it has no issues at all. I give it a wash with warm soapy water every 3-4 years to remove dust and layers of dead skin cells and let it dry on the clothes line in the sun for half a day. Plug it back in and it's as good as new. The printing on the keys hasn't even faded, although the down arrow and delete keys are a bit more worn then all the others!

Make sure you take off your TV 3D glasses.
