Looking to get an SSD, Samsung EVO?

Hi all. Looking to get a replacement SSD to replace my 2-year old one. Pretty new to this so not sure what's cheap, or a good model to get to compete with the EVO.

Is a Samsung 850 EVO 500gb worth $172? I note it has been cheaper in the past but not sure if waiting for a sale would be much cheaper.

Also the model is MZ-75E500BW - is that Australian stock? Many thanks.

  • Where are you getting this price from?

    • I have a targeted 20% off eBay voucher expiring tomorrow.

      • 20% off sitewide!?!?

        • Yep was a targeted single use maximum $50 coupon

That's a great price for any 500GB SSD nowadays, let alone the 850 Evo, so I'd go for it. Don't see any sales coming up soon that'll give anything better and SSD prices have been generally rising lately.

EDIT: Any reason for upgrading from your 2 year old one? Just for capacity? Performance of SATA based drives haven't really changed much in the past couple of years.

    • Thanks for the advice, pulled the trigger on the Evo.

My old one is a Kingston- been trying to figure it out still but my OS on it stopped booting up recently, and after Speccy-ing my SSD I've been told its messed up and if I reinstall Windows it'll likely fail again sooner or later. Apparently it's not too rare especially on AMD builds or something (this stuff goes over my head).

Need a working one asap so figured I'd fork out for a good one.

      • Should be able to get the drive replaced under warranty (should be 3 years) if it's showing signs of failure, although that would take a while.

The SSD will have the same failure rates regardless of it being run on an AMD/Intel/x system.

The Samsung 850 Evos are highly rated.
Crucial MX300 are not far behind in performance but have slightly higher capacity for same or slightly less than the Evos like 275GB or 525GB.

^These are my top picks. Can't go wrong with them.

Kingston and Sandisk are also good alternatives but they offer less capacities in like 240GB, 480Gb which is a tad smaller than the equivalent Samsung/crucial drives.

These are for SATA III drives.

If you want more performance you should look into NVMe PCie drives
