What Happens to Refund to a Credit Card That's Closed?

Will be upgrading my Kogan mobile from small to medium and I will be refunded the portion of Small plan that's left.

Problem is the card I used to pay was the CBA's cc (the spend $500 get $250 CB), Kogan says they have to refund to the card, so what's going to happen then? CBA keeps the fund until I call or automatically transferred to my everyday account?

I assume no clawback on the cashback too?

  • Based on my experience with ANZ - it will be a credit in your no longer active account, which you can request to be transferred to your everyday bank account

  • Generally credited to your bank account if its the same bank as the credit card . Else you might wanna call them up . Refunds take longer than closing an account.

  • "I assume no clawback on the cashback too?" - why would you assume that?

And when did you apply for the commonwealth bank card? Was it last Oct-Dec, or the most recent promotion that is still going?

And why are you closing the card anyway. If you applied under the most recent promotion, you have already been charged an annual fee, you might as well keep it open 11months and then close it just before the next annual fee is charged.

    • Oct-Dec. As the card's closed months ago and I don't have any fund with CBA atm haha.

Closed as I have some other better CCs to use and planning to apply next year when the same offers come back.

  • i had this happen i purchased a item via paypal with credit card as the fund source was only $25
seller refunded because no more items in stock went to my closed commbank account card
spent months trying to get it refunded as it sat in limbo in the account.
Ended up just forgetting about it commonwealth were not helpful at all got told it would be
refunded into my new nab account 3 times each time i rang back there was no record of it.
    So good luck

    • oh but you closed all accounts with CBA?? So you were getting them to transfer from a closed CBA card into NAB everyday account?

      • yes closed all accounts still had a personal loan tried that first but said they couldn't transfer and i would need to transfer to a different account
so thats when i provided NAB details they could cleary see the funds still sitting there but no one could seem to transfer them.

  • My experience with getting a refund onto a closed card with the CBA was pretty average. I had to make quite a few phone calls to get the credit transferred onto another card I held with them, and the option to turn it into a deposit into a transactions account was not an option.

    • interesting so what if one doesn't have card with them anymore? As I am closing off my diamond card too haha.

      • Can you get the refund before closing your card?

      • Could you ask for a cheque? I have a similar issue with NAB and they said that they could issue me a cheque for the refund
