Insurance with AmEx Explorer

Hi all,

as I am about to leave for an overseas trip, where I will be renting a car and I have also just bought a new phone (all bought with my Explorer), I am a potential user of their insurances and I thought it would be good to collect all the info regarding AmEx Explorer offered insurances into one thread.

I have tried calling them to get the answers, but every single time I am having troubles hearing them (sounds like low quality Skype call), various accents or dropped calls.

On OzB I have found answers to only some of my questions. And even then they seem to vary in different posts.

I am hoping to get all the details about travel insurance, car rental insurance and mobile phone screen insurance.

GENERAL

  1. Is there a difference if your flights, car rental or phone has been paid by card, via paypal or using points/travel credit?
  2. What exactly activates the insurance? How do I know I am insured? None of us would like to find out that we actually aren't covered, although we thought we were.

TRAVEL INSURANCE
As far as I know the trip has to start and end in Australia for insurance to be valid, but

  1. Do I have buy return ticket from one site/using one airline or can I combine different legs using different airlines?
  2. Are multi-city trips also covered?
  3. Can I buy the tickets from any website or travel agent in the world or are there any restrictions (.AU only, AmEx Travel only)?
  4. What exactly am I covered against?

CAR RENTAL

  1. Are all rental companies included or just the ones that I can find on AmEx Travel site?
  2. Are extra drivers covered?
  3. What exactly am I covered against?
  4. Do I need any extra covers on top of AmEx provided insurance? Looking at Avis.ca site, I have no idea if I should get any of these extra protections: Loss Damage Waiver, Personal Accident Insurance, Personal Effects Protection, Additional Liability Insurance?

MOBILE SCREEN
I only know that You are eligible for 2 screen repairs a year,

  1. Are grey imports covered?
  2. How long after buying the phone is the insurance active?

Thank You all in advance!

    • Thanks.
It says: "Supplementary Card Members are not covered for Travel
      Insurance benefits"

Does it mean that if we travel together, we should both have our own amex cards and pay separately? Makes the whole thing pointless.

      • I am not going to read the T & Cs for you, but would assume that to mean a supplementary card holder cannot pay for travel on their supplementary card and expect to be covered separately from the primary cardholder.

It will state elsewhere who is covered by the primary cardholder's travel insurance once engaged (likely the cardholder, plus spouse and children travelling with him/her).

  • Use of paypal or other 3rd party excludes u from anex insurance i think
