Diploma of Mental Health or Community Services or Counselling?

Hi, I am wondering what further studies should I do next?

My current qualification is Certificate IV in Disability with 3 years full time experience as a Disability Support Worker.

I am a 40 years old male (if it is relevant).

I live in Adelaide metro.

I can only study online or external due to current full time job and family commitments.

My aim is not to get a promotion but to diversify my work experience in Community Services.

My further study options are:

Diploma of Mental Health
Diploma of Community Services
Diploma of Counselling

What University degree should I aim for after the Diploma?

Any advise based on your life experiences will be most welcome.

Many thanks in anticipation.

  • Nursing. the world is short of male nurses.

  • Diploma of community services is a waste of time. No government agency is going to employ you at Diploma level. If you want to study community services at all, I would recommend Bachelor of Community Services (external) Flinders University or a Bachelor of Social Work (online/external) In the same vein a Diploma of Counselling is also a waste of time and money because at Diploma level, you are (legally) unable to work independently. If you want to study any of these courses, then the only way your going to get into the community services field as a qualified practitioner, is via a bachelor degree course.

I commend you on wanting to upgrade your qualifications and good luck in your new career pursuit.
