India itinerary - 9 days beginning this weekend

Hey ozbargainers, currently in Hyderabad for work this week. First time in India so figured I would stay for another 9 days for personal travel.

I'm thinking of flying to Delhi and doing the golden triangle for this time…

Reaching out to the OzB community for any tips/advice on the above or any other suggestions?

First time in India? and If you are not Indian, I suggest you to book a tour of golden triangle :)

    • Yes i would probably suggest that too

9 days is a good amount to get a decent bit of the triangle done, but have a look at how much driving you will be doing. You may have to skip a couple of stops (i'd just skip Delhi entirely… we flew from Udaipur to Hyderabad direct so you can presumably do it in reverse)

Yep, Delhi should be avoided but I couldn't since it was my point of entry. I did the entire golden triangle in 5 days, more than enough for me.

        • …..how?? There's like 40hrs of driving

There's 5 decent cities to visit and it'd be tough to do them in 1 day each + car time

        • @jellykingdom:
Correct, 5 days, which has more than 40hrs :)

This is not the tour I took but simple google search will get you number of tours, inc this

        • @boomramada:

Yes but in terms of usable hours, 5 days is more like 60hrs of usable time. I would not recommend night time driving in India, regardless of what sort of tour you're doing

And just to see the sights, let alone explore at all, you will want a good +8hrs in each destination

        • @jellykingdom:

I had plenty of usable hours. I felt that I had way too much, specially in Delhi :)

    • Why book a tour? You can practically do everything yourself for a quarter of the price.

      • Have you been to India (I assume you not Indian decedent) ? :)

        • I am not of Indian descent and I traveled in India for 8 months. Yes, it's slightly challenging, but a bit of preparation can solve it.

      • Not really if you are not Indian.

What makes you say that? Tours are sucking in all the lazy tourists who are not willing to spend the time in researching their destinations and ways to get there. Do you want to see India through a window of an A/C bus? It takes determination, but it's worth it…

        • @BargainCowboy: agreed that Tours sucks. Also on the other hand its quite difficult to travel thru India without knowing the local language etc.
You have traveled in India for 8 months. How comfortable were you in the first couple of weeks and how comfortable were you in the last few weeks?
I am recommending the Tours is you want a relaxed holiday. If you are feeling adventurous then its up to you.

        • @apple2016: Yea, true, definitely better after a month or so, but a tour gives you a false sense of India. I say take it as it is, or don't take it at all…

  • I went to Taj mahal. It was an unintended detour. However I am glad I did it. I am even more glad I had a guide who explained the history significance of various things there and at the Agra fort. When I was talking about to another person who went there and just walked around themselves, I realise all they took in was the sights but no history. After hearing me talked about it, they wished they had a guide as well.

    We had a good guide.

    • Definitely go (and the baby Taj and Agra Fort) and definitely get a guide. It makes it all a more magical experience

  • Check out the rural farms of Punjab! Amritsar - the Golden Temple. Visit the Jammu Kashmere District up in the North..

You've got 9 days for the trip…it's not enough time to do the Dehli golden traingle AND the far north Amritsar trip that I've recommended. Choose one.

I suggest Amritsar, home ot the Golden Temple, beautiful farms, and Jammu Kashmere - home to hillstations and natural sceneries. (I'm biased. I'm from Punjab - It's the state in which Amritsar belongs to.)

Definitely Amritsar, but I wouldn't go up to Kashmir at this time, things are very tense. It is beautiful though.

  • Thanks all for the help here. Have booked a tour given the advice :)

    • From Hyderabad go to Goa for 4 days and then fly for golden triangle tour…

      • Thanks - I did really consider this. But figured would minimise moving around and didnt want to feel rushed for golden triangle… if only a few more days!
