    What would make one good?
Battery life, number of devices, range
Is it your primary internet for home?

  • tp-link mr3020.

These are meant to be good. Just plug it in to a power source, and you can plug in a usb 4g modem into it.
    https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Networking-Wireless/Rout…

So you could attach it to a xiaomi power pack, or a laptop, or a phone charger, plug in a 4g modem using one of the usb ports and away you go. I have used them to create a mobile hotspot when travelling, when I didn't want to use my phone and its data. Sometimes you might find a 10gb sim cheap and use that for a month in the mr3020 with your laptop, tablet and or phone.

Depends on your use case really.

    • ive signed up for the promo with optus. 100gb for$70. how is this better than huawei e5573 (currently using that now)

  • I have an Optus locked Huawei E5573. Last week they were on sale at BigW online. That may still be on.

It has about 5 hours battery and up to 8 wifi connections and is 4G. Fits in a shirt pocket. The usb is for charging (not supplied), configuration, and also used as a mobile connection.

    • i am using huawei 5573. wondering if there is anything better in the market

      • You still haven't defined what you think is "good" or "better"…

  • I think you may be a bit confused. You seem to be after a usb modem/router with better features than the e5573, not a mobile wifi router. That will depend a lot on what you want out of the feature set:
    speed
    routing
    battery life
    software interface
open to different networks and what bands are coverred.

Unless you work out what you want people are unlikely to be able to give you much advice. Also, this is an area where reasonable technical knowledge is required.

    • i am not looking for a usb modem. i am looking for a mobile wifi router. main concern: speed.

      • There are lots of factors that determine your data speed; the make and model of your modem is only one of them.

Others include the current weather, the number and type of cell towers in your location, the level of congestion from other users also on the network, throttling by the carrier under fair use policies….even the location of the modem in a building, the materials that building is made of, and other devices in use in your house or your neighbour's house can have an effect.

Is this WiFi modem going to carried around and used as a mobile hotspot in lots of locations, or mainly used in a single location in your house?

        • single location in the house

        • @ApplePineapplePen: Then you don't really need a mobile WiFi router - it's an option, and it does work, and it's probably the cheapest solution. But this kind of device is packaged for long battery life, compact form factor and mobility rather than best possible reception and WiFi strength.

You may be better off with a 4g modem (with an external antenna) plugged into a more conventional router - this would give you much closer to the maximum speeds the network can offer, and much better WiFi range in your house. It would also give you ethernet ports for plugging in wired network equipment. But it's likely to be much more expensive, at around $400-500 for the complete setup.

Do you have good signal strength in your house? What kind of speeds are you getting, and are those speeds consistent at all times of the day?

        • @klaw81: i do not have adsl or nbn. thats the reason y im using mobile wifi

        • @ApplePineapplePen: I know you want to use your Optus 4G SIM card. That's fine - I get that. But there are more ways of doing this than using a mobile WiFi router….these are not really designed well for what you want to achieve.

Does your current Huawei E5573 report good signal strength in your house? What kind of speeds are you getting from Speedtest using this connection, and are those speeds consistent at all times of the day?

        • @klaw81:

signal strength: approx. Download speed is approx 1-2Mbps. sometimes it gets above 2Mbps. speed is slower during the evening.

        • @ApplePineapplePen: What's your signal strength again?

Your device is capable of much higher speeds than that, so it either has a poor signal or the network is heavily congested….or maybe both.

Signal strength can be improved with antennas, and/or better placement in your house. There's nothing you can do about network congestion, except switch to another network.

        • @klaw81:

how to install antennas? what can be done to improve the speed?

        • @ApplePineapplePen: An antenna will give you better reception, which could potentially boost your speed.

Something like this should give you a much better signal - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/35dBi-3G-4G-LTE-Dual-MIMO-ANTENNA…

Again, this will only help with speeds if your reception is poor. You still haven't given any indication of what your signal strength is.

If you have good signal and your speeds are still low, it's probably because the network is heavily congested and there's nothing you can do about it. Mobile networks are not a good substitute for a wired network.

        • @klaw81:

signal is weak. is the antenna modem compatible with huawei e5573?

        • @klaw81: Those antennae are quite useless according to this teardown video

    • its only on telstra network and i am on optus network.

  • looking to join optus nBn network. I 've already got a modem - dlink AC1200 one that's 'NBN-ready' but not sure if I should get optus Sagemcom F@ST 3864 WiFi modem.
