Changes to CommBank Awards Earn Rate (AMEX)

Went to Netbank tonight to repay my credit card debt (I have a Diamond Awards - CommBank Amex/MasterCard combo).

In one of the "bank messages" which I never bother reading: "changes to the way you will earn award points"

https://www.commbank.com.au/personal/credit-cards/awards/cha…

So it appears that CommBank is changing the earn rate for Awards AMEX Cardholders from 3 points per $1 (AMEX)/1.5 points per $1 (MasterCard) to
- 0.5 points per $1 (3 points per $1 still applies at Coles, Woolies, Petrol stations and DJ/Myer only) for AMEX purchases
- no change for MasterCard

So that means that for all bill payments; flight bookings; conference bookings and large purchases (cars etc.) - should not bother using AMEX anymore..

Anyone else in the same situation? Should I consider downgrading to Gold/Platinum, or close my CommBank Awards account completely if I am unable to maximise point earning in order to offset the annual fee payment?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

I downgraded and got a non-bank amex instead - there always seem to be sign up bonuses.

  • Downgrade just before your next annual fee

I want to cancel my Bank issued Amex and sign up with American Express themselves, had a quick scan, looks as though less points are required to redeem cash…$100 is 13500pts vs Commbank $100 being $20000…only thing holding me back is no annual card fees because i have a mortgage with Commbank.

I am also considering cancelling my diamond card but I am paying reduced fee of $119 only and Amex issued cards which are better than CBA have very high Annual Fee.

I might hang around for another year or so to see if it is still worth keeping this card.

Same view from me. I am paying the same fee, and since you can take advantage of the AMEX offers which will definitely compensate for the annual fee, the points are cream on top.

      • the points are cream on top.

        yep, 100% agree.

  • What do you use the points for? You are probably best getting the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black credit card. No annual fee for the first year and comes with 75,000 bonus Qantas points if you reach the minimum spend. Card gives you 1 Qantas point per dollar spent. 2.5 Comm Bank points equal 1 Qantas point so you are earning a much better rate with ANZ.

  • Maybe this will help people here but BoM Amplify Signature is still offering 1.5 per $1 domestic spent. The only problem is the annual fee is $279 but get 90k points once off plus 10% of points earned as bday bonus. Maybe even free if you have mortgage

Citibank down to 1 per $1 for Signature but at least that's Fee Free For Life for many of us.

  • Look like its apply across all the major banks;

  • The Platinum Card has the same ruling change, it is bank wide. It is not only DJ/Myer but all department stores that retain the bonus on using AMEX. Suffice to say most eBay purchases and online companies will now be relegated to 0.5 points with AMEX. The upside is that overseas transactions will now not incur foreign transaction fees on AMEX, and if I switch from 28 Degrees to AMEX for foreign transactions online, I get reward points. I believe it will be a miserable 0.5 pts unless it is a department store transaction. I get no reward points from 28 Degrees.

  • probably mean you still get 15 bonus point per dollar spent with Kaligo when booking hotels using a CBA diamond Amex.

However, expedia has 10% off using amex and it is eligible for up to 5.5% cash back rewards.

hmm. 15% off hotel fees.. why not?

  • Just downgraded to from Gold to Low Rate with $59 per year. Dodged the overcharging bullet. No use for Amex without flights, technology or PayPal on the table so I'm sticking with the same limit but not really using it. Bless saving for a house deposit.
