Fly to Shanghai/Beijing and Visa Questions

Hi all

Aiming to head to Shanghai within a week (by 17/18th sept or so) and looking for a cheap flight. Prefer to leave from Sydney but will consider another domestic airport if it is worthwhile (trade off between cost and inconvenience).

I have tried a few websites including air china - seems to be best but charges more to go to a secondary airport than a direct flight, webjet, qantas, cathay… (unfortunately Adisio doesnt do this route yet). Hoping someone out their knows travel agent/website/airline i have overlooked.

Also when i look to do the visa at their consulate they seem to want people to use an outsourcing service but a friend said dont worry and just go to the consulate anyway..any suggestions/feedback

thanks in advance!

  • It's pretty late to be getting a cheap ticket. Air China are usually pretty cheap (because of the service perhaps). I would take what you can get.

  • When do you want to come back? Or is it a one-way flight?

Malaysian Airlines seems to have some cheapish tickets ($450-$500) from Sydney to Shanghai. I don't know how that compares to Air China.

However, the flights back to Sydney are enormously expensive ($3929).

Perhaps you could fly Malaysian to Shanghai and then fly back on a different airline if you can secure a better deal for the returning flight?

  • thanks guys for your suggestions. yep i left it too late so i will reschedule and aim to leave 15 Oct when the low shoulder season starts again (and will return after one month).

I will start my research earlier this time :)

    cheers

    • $1231 Return on China Eastern. Departing 18 Sep returning 19th October, includes a stop in Melbourne on the return leg. (Searched via ITA)

On 15th Oct flights can be had for around $1000 I believe.

China Southern tend to have cheap prices if you dont mind transiting through Guanzhou, especially during high season (booked SYD-PNH $1068 return), so you could have a look at flying during high season early January as well.

Don't know why but CS charge more to go CAN only as opposed to PNH with two additional flights?

      • Thsnks lambsie!

will go for Oct 15th departure (Jan to cold for me :)
