Has anyway bought a car that you have later discovered has been totalled and rebirthed? Maybe in another state?

Yes it was a grey import purchased from a dealer pretending to be a private seller. It was a Alfa Romeo Gullible GTV.

    • But did it have its digital tacho wound down?

      • It's got Gullible in its name, what do you think I am?

  • I almost bought a car like that, negotiated the price, took a test drive then I spent the $3.40 to get the PPSR report and backed out because the car was previously involved in a car accident and was written off.

    • through private or dealer?

This was through a private seller. I have also heard stories of some people replacing the entire dashboard of a car with one from the wreckers so that the car looks like it has low mileage.

I was looking at buying one that required rebirthing. It had been written off due to its age and panel damage. The panels were all the removable front panels/bonut/bumper. It had low kms and just required a donor car that was a write off with rear damage.

The VIV (?) Road worthy test for getting it back on the road was ~$515.

Recently we nearly had traded a Mustang, ~3000kms on the clock. REVS check came back fine…

Until we had to do a warranty repair from Ford, and we found out this 1yo car had no warranty.

Turns out it was involved in a train derailment, major accident, owner had bought it from the auctions and fixed it up.

How the average private buyer can avoid this I don't know. As I said it was REVS clear! Have to check for signs of panel repair/replacement.
