Reliable Ute for Commuting under 15k

Hi,

Looking for suggestions on a reliable ute that will be commuting 600-700kms a week. Not fussed whether single, extended or dual cab. Would prefer tub over tray but not incredibly fussed. Easy enough to change over.

Was thinking maybe a VE Holden Commodore or a Ford Falcon? Seems like any 2007+ model Hiluxs/Tritons/Navaras all have 200,000+kms in my price range. Think something closer to 100,000 is more suitable.

Any ideas?

A Hilux with 200k is barely run in.

Lots of Hilux's out there with pretty low mileage for under $15k. Some examples:

There are even more if you are happy with something older than 2012.

    • Thanks mate, definitely plenty out there. I'll keep looking.

Datsun 1200 Ute or Suzuki Mighty Boy.

    I'd go the Datsun personally.

    • This should be the only answer!

  • our 2000 Rodeo V6 4x4 dual cab has been absolutely reliable (flat batteries aside) since purchasing with 6000km on it. it's a low use vehicle so only 131000k now.
if we downsized to one vehicle, it would be the one to keep. jack of all, master of none.

    • Bit thirsty though?

      • 13litres/100km in moderate traffic
        11/100 on highway

  • Extend the budget, but new

New single cab 4x2 hilux manual is around $21-$22k drive away. 3yr warranty, CPS etc

Disclaimer - I work for Toyota

    • thats the base model workmate though? Very rough. Absolutely agricultural vs a commodore/falcon

      • Eh, it's new and still gets Bluetooth etc.

        • just noticed the toyota comment - not with zook anymore?

        • @Matt P:

          Nope :)

        • @Spackbace: ahh one of dem multifranchise things ;)

        • @Matt P:

          Nope, changed dealerships!

Was working at a multi franchise (Holden/Suzuki)

        • @Spackbace: congrats! Now, are all questions re toyotas to you? :)

@Ametric: you know the answer is always 'corolla' or 'Camry'. How many questions can there be?

  • Are you sure you want to commute 6-700kms a week in a ute? are you carrying anything with you? If you aren't carrying much, then Utes can get pretty uncomfortable with a bouncy back end designed to carry a load. The most car like ones are the higher spec, but often with a smaller load rating. I'd pick either an XR6 Ford or SV6 commodore if it's only for light weight commuting and weekend warrior stuff. Of course extra Passengers would require a dual cab.

Edit: I own a 2007 Navara dual cab. Bought it about 10months ago for $17k with 135000km on it, so it's close to your budget, but I'm not sure I'd be keen to commute that distance in it per week. Mine does about a tank of fuel per month and is only a short commute so I put up with the rougher ride becuase it's handy on the weekends for carting gear around. When I looked for mine the hiluxes were all older and higher kms for the same price. All the comparable price dual cabs were the older smaller models.
