Plumbing rip off - Jims Plumbing

Purchased a Glem Oven from Harvey Norman was $1250, I got them down to $1100 - winning
Collected the oven and rang Harry who was recommended by Harvey Norman, he wanted a cool $175 to install and he agreed to $150

He wasn't available for a week or so and said to call him back later in the day. I collected three other quotes - $175, $220 & $260.

Silly me used Jim's Plumbing- told them my budget and they said it should be fine

They totally and utterly ripped me and were not competitive with a bill for $610 for an hours work and he fudged his invoice to say he was working 1:45 mins.

    cool story bro.

    so long story short,
u got a heap of quotes - yet decided you needed it done instantly , called jim's - failed to get a quote beforehand and they ripped you a new one

I wouldn't have paid it. Would have asked for a breakdown of pricing. Or ring them up and tell you think you were charged wrong

Cheapest is not always the best. Start with a complaint to Mr Jim him self?

Did the Glem Oven install require both an Electrician and a Plumber/Gas Fitter?

  • +6

Why did you use Jim's Plumbing if you didn't even get a quote from them?

  • +2

Why didn't you just accept the $175, by knocking down the price you probably knocked yourself down the priority list and ended up with Jim's Plumbing.

That said I'd be asking for a price breakdown

    Labour cost
    Labour (billed hrs )
Parts (request breakdown of parts used)
    Cost of compliance testing
    Travel time (including cost/per hour)
Request description of works performed (for example did they have to replace the gas piping and/or install a power point for electric start)

You might find the works saved your house from a gas explosion, alternatively you might find they gouged you

Thank you random stranger. Don't be like ucareers and get a quote.

Ring jims head office and lodge a complaint, they should do something about it if it's true. If it is true and they do nothing send your story to The Checkout (ABC TV)

but as someone else said, why would you negotiate with one sparky and just let another do it and charge what he wants? You are a troll, right?

  • Hi All

After making complaint to management on the day and the day after they dropped price from 610 to 250. Thats almost 400 saved - thats a considerable reduction.

When you buy a new oven you dont necessary want it sitting in the kitchen in a box and as mentioned i thought i would try jims plumbing.

In the end i paid a premium 75 more than originally quoted but not 610 they attempted to stitch me with.

Lesson learnt - always shop around and if you need to wait a few days or a week; wait it out as there are people just waiting to stitch you.

    • Sounds like Uncle Jim was trying to take advantage of you.

  • Had a hot water unit die on Sunday so I expected a premium charge but was charged almost $4000 for three hours work and unit that retails for $715! What a rip off!

    • We diy 80l hot water change for $50 + fuel.

      Youtube is everyone's friend.
