Why Weet-bix isn't sealed in box ?

So, this morning i opened a new box of weet-bix that i kept inside my top pantry and dip 1/3 of a piece into a cup of hot milk till it's soaked then took it out and ready to put into my mouth.

But just before then i noticed a tiny little speck of dot (same color as weet-bix) crawled out of the weet-bix and crawled back into the nooks of dry top bit near where my finger was holding.

So why weet-bix ain't sealed like other cereals ? The box is partial glued just to stay shut for you to slit open and on the inside is only a plastic bag folded back without sealing or whatsover.

Anyway, being an ozbargainer, i still shoved that piece of micro-orgasm infested weed-bit into my mouth.

you had me at micro-orgasm. I'll have what he/she's having.

if it's a micro-orgasm you are selling yourself short. Now if it was a macro-orgasm then you had me at "hello".

    • must be those weed-bits

isn't it in plastic? Vita Brits are.

also if you have larvae in your cereal they're probably in the rest of your pantry.

I agree. I got those horrible pantry moths from a packet of walnuts from India; that I neglected to put in their own container. Now I, regularly, have to decontaminate the pantry to reduce the infestation. I wash down the pantry with vinegar, I've covered all the holes with sticky covers, I have the pantry moth traps and I store everything in containers now to isolate everything - I still seem to get them in summer. PITA.

There is always the debate, isn't there, when you've cooked something and you find a little critter. Had the issue with some breadcrumbs on a macaroni cheese. I wondered if it was enough to just scrap off the breadcrumbs or bin the lot. It was only for us so I just removed all the crumbs, and the top layer, and it was all OK.

      • Lose those pheromone-powered pantry moth traps - in my experience, they attract all the pantry moths in the neighbourhood to your cupboards. No traps = no moths.

    • Not sure about Vita-brits , the weet-bix plastic is just folded back without any sealing like what other normal food packaging where you need to tear it open.. whereas with weet-bix's plastic you just unfolds and it's already wide open (not sealed).

According to an estimate, an average USAn ingests a couple of lbs of insect parts per year. They are naturally present in flour, vegies, etc etc. Some larvae survive and develop, hence moths even in a screened house. Of course, finding crawlies in the box has a greater yuk impact.

most of us eat a quarter of a kilogram of insects by accident each year. Insects find their way into our foodstuffs no matter how hard we try to keep them out. Interestingly, if you eat organic, your rate of insect consumption is much higher.

Good to see you're saving the planet. :)

Cornflakes and rice bubbles go waxy and soft and need to be airtight. I think wheatbix keep better with airing. This might be a version of the Jaffa Cake debate. I think it's a matter of hygroscopy.

  • extra protein. go for it OP.

So why weet-bix ain't sealed like other cereals ?

No idea, but that's the way it's always been. Maybe ask them?

    • It's to make Nutri-Grain openers feel like tough guys.

    Thats a pretty good question

  • Hope you've taken the rest of the box back for a refund

Maybe stop buying it. Aside from not sealing your Weet-bix, Sanitarium also doesn't pay tax.

    • thanks for that bit of info. that's very interesting why they don't pay tax. like the former Auspost CEO who won't give a payrise to motorbike posties but gets bonuses in the millions on top of millions of dollars of salary. what a rought

  • So you get free bugs, and you're whinging?

Ozbarginer or not?? should have posted it as a deal.

    • probably because not even bugs want to eat that

  • Well I have some boxes of Vitabrits that are about 3 years out of date. They're sealed and each one I open they still taste fine. BUT other foods don't - they absorb a plastic taste. So I'd say it's because they're so dry - nothing (usually) lives in them, they don't deteriorate, they don't absorb plastic taste, and have no scent to attract anything. e.g. I had sugar right next to them and ants kept getting in. Cockroaches in the kitchen too, in boxes and stuff, even if they can't get at the food inside. But nothing bothers getting into the Vitabrits. They're… inert I guess.
