HK Stopover, Do We Need to Clear Customs?

We are travelling to Hk from Melbourne on Qantas and land at 6pm on Sat 2nd September. We are travelling on to Taiwan and were planning on saying in a HK airport hotel overnight and getting a flight in the morning however the cost is unbelievable per night in all of the airport hotels we could find.

There is a Eva air flight departing at 8.55pm,could we make this flight? Do we need to clear customs in HK? Or can we be in transit? Is it worth risking missing the flight and blowing the money of the Qantas flight is even a little late?

Really have no clue on this.. Any advice appreciated!

    I don't think you'd make that flight.

You would most likely have to clear immigration, collect bags and reenter the airport and check in with EVA airlines all within 3 hours. Immigration can take a while.

Thanks for the reply and research! I guess that would mean we would be checking into the hotel about 2am..loooong day!

      • No worries.
Worth phoning your Hotel (24hr check-in?) in Taiwan just before you leave Hong Kong to ensure your room is held.
        Safe travels!

With some airlines you can ask them to forward the bags into the next plane even if they aren't part of the same alliance, but your mileage may vary.

It's called an 'interline baggage agreement' - which airlines can have without being part of the same alliance. I did a google search, it looks like eva air will interline through to qantas (even on separate tickets). I couldn't get information about the other way.

Lots of qantas check-in staff don't know what's possible and tend not to bother going to extra mile to find out.

In either case, 3 hours sounds like plenty of time to me to collect baggage and check in again (unless your flight is late). They're pretty efficient at hong kong with Australian passport holders (might be slower for other passports).

When I flew into Hong Kong last year, I had my bags and through customs and immigration in less than an hour. Was very fast.

Noah's Ark hotel is on Park Island, not far from the airport, and only $150 a night.

Can you do carry on luggage outbound? HK airport is vast. The internal airport train system is great, but getting from one terminal to another is probably a 45 minute allowance. I guess you will have to clear customs to check in on EVA as they are Star Alliance and Qantas is one world. I think your breathing room is only 1-1.5 hours, so pretty tight.

Cheap solution is HK is a 24 hour airport so sleep on the plane and shop and read to fill the hours at the airport. Probably the nicest airport in the world.
