Recommendations for a Cheap Holiday

Hey everyone.

It's been a couple of years since my partner and I went on a holiday, and we had kind of planned to do one this year. Then suddenly it's June, and we still haven't even thought about where we want to go. So I thought to get some ideas flowing, I'd get some ideas off of some of the more seasoned travellers on here.

Some notes about what we're after:
- We're saving for a house, so we've cut down on the smashed avos and lattes, and would also like to do the holiday on the cheaper side of things, if possible (~$2-3k I guess).
- We have no kids, so no issues there.
- We'd probably be going around September or October this year, for around a week, give or take a few days.
- No particular preference for domestic or international.
- We're open to just about anything. We don't mind the cold, but spending some time on the beach also sounds pretty nice.

So where should we go, and what is there to do there?
Where have you travelled, and did you enjoy it?

Would appreciate any suggestions.

Cheers.

  • Singapore or Kuala Lumpur.

    Singapore, Shop, Eat, Sleep.
    Beaches @ Sentosa. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sentosa#Beaches

No no no no. Singapore "beaches" with 50 container ships parked out at sea??!!! Maybe I've been spoilt by living near the sunshine coast.

      • Well I know, but Sand+Water is a Beach.
        Man, they import (sand) everything….

OP could fly Perth-Brisbane-Perth on TigerAir.com.au from June from around $358 return. But winter in Brisbane or Gold Coast, nah…

KL or Bali is looking better and better.

  • Hmmm, it's relative, but $2k doesn't seem like much unless you get super cheap flights and/or go tight on accommodation. Have you considered a cruise ship?

    • We're definitely not opposed to a cruise. We were thinking of catching one to NZ ages ago, but never got around to following up on the idea.

And I meant to put $2-3k, have updated the OP to clarify.

Tasmania is great if you've never been. Plenty to see & do.

We actually have been to Tassie, in fact that was the last holiday. It was great, and we're looking to go back one day, but kind of feel like we should try somewhere else first.

Kuala Lumpur if you're into food. Get some cheap AirAsia X Flights

  • Perth to Bali Airasia. For cheaper seats, exclude last couple of weeks Sept. and 1st couple in Oct. in your search.

    • Also schoolies is mid November to early December, probably best to plan around that as well depending on location.

Spend $2k on camping gear - holidays for life.

Everybody holidays differently. Some want to lie back on the beach or poolside lounge, others want sights to see, some want action. Personally I think if I don't come back tired from a holiday it has been a waste, preferring walking, mountain biking, water sports, snowboarding etc.

    • And some want to travel to foreign countries where they break into houses and go through the owners underwear drawer…..

    How's the serenity

I stopped there on the way down to Philip Island last year. The serenity wasn't that great.

      So much serenity.

Stay home and enjoy eating smashed avocados and drinking lattes in front of netflix.

  • Vietnam and most other South East Asian countries are cheap. Find 2-3 star accommodations to make it even cheaper.

    • September and October are still the rainy season. It may not be ideal, but its definitely cheaper when its the rainy season

NT, perfect time to visit while its cooler.. heaps to see and do.

  • From Perth for a quick cheap getaway Bali or KL are hard to beat.
Multiple carriers flying into Bali regularly on the cheap. Bali is set up for tourists so lots to see and do.
KL is Air Asia's main hub so regular cheap flights. Its not exactly a tourist destination but if you like to shop and eat its a great place and cheap too.
My daughter and MIL are going for a week in October. Their flights and accommodation only came to around $320 each.

  • I went to Crystal Creek for my 10yr anniversary. Cost us around $3k all up. Basically you just chill out.

  • Siem Reap, for Angkor Wat, amazing food and cheapest cocktails.
Southern Andaman islands for beach time.

Cancel the holiday and keep saving for that house you need.

Firstly if you can travel in group of 4 would be good….
Destinations: so many even for Malaysia. Kuala Lumpur or Kota Kinabalu? Malaysia Airlines fly to KK weekly, direct.
What is your interest? If it's diving, sightseeing, seafood, drinking, shopping, then KK will be good for you.

    Go to the movies

  • September is still generally cold, but October-November are great months for a trip down south. I personally think the South West is amongst the most beautiful in Australia (and there's a lot of beauty in this country!). A trip down to Albany-Denmark, stay a few nights and then move to Pemberton for a couple of nights and finish off with Margaret River - can't go wrong!

Edit: OR you could head off in the other direction, a trip to Kalbarri, Shark Bay and/or Coral Bay will be amazing too!

  • Get a four person tent, and equipment if you don't already have it, and go camping. Pretty cheap holiday.
