Laptop 2 in 1 under $500 USD

Dear All,

I am looking to buy a laptop 2 in 1 (which can be used as tablet and PC). I will mainly use this for long operation hours plugged into AC power as I have to be online for at least 8-10hours a day. The use will be mainly for browsing the net.. office applications .. file sharing… music just to listen.. youtube.. social media and photoshop minor editing.
My previous laptop Dell Inspiron is almost at an end and heats up a lot even after cooling fan installation.

I have family travelling to USA in end of June early July and would like to take advantage of this. I did not buy laptops for a very long time but at work I am using Lenovo Yoga 900s and love it.

I was looking online today and 2:1 laptops from Dell.. Lenovo and HP seems to have given some good deals in Amazon.

Could you guys please recommend me a good 2in1 laptop for under $500 USD ?

yes i dont know why no one has given you any response in 12hrs plus.

Your thoughts align with mine but I only viewed one product.

I heard of the Lenovo Miix 320. Google it. Its supposedly US$199. It fits my needs as a very very 2ndary occasional unit.

So about $300 aud but I dislike the SKU. 2gb 64gb sounds like a pain to me.

      But wait.

$399 aud. That seems to be $100 aud tax. Assume $30 gst. The SKU is better to me. 4gb 32gb is workable.

As of yet I have seen no China tablet combo that is better but would be open to suggestings.

I'm assuming you need to spend a lot more than $400 aud to get better cpu mem combo and I trust Lenovo. Other brands??? Hmmm.

Lenovo does have SKUs with LTE and up to 4gb 128gb but have seen none for sale yet.

  • Thanks mate fort your response.
I got an advantage as my family member is going to USA.
The laptops are much cheaper there. I looked into Amazon and Dell website.
I liked the Dell 13 inch 2:1 360 rotation touch laptop with 4GB RAM 500GB HDD i3 processor starting from $500 USD

I also liked the Lenovo yoga but that's way over my budget.

Do you think Dell inspiron 13 inch 2:1 is a good buy ?

  • Very disappointing no one came forward to help

Dell Inspiron 13 7000 2-in-1 looks fine, but many of the low-end Inspirons generally do not have great build quality, and I don't recommend them as work laptops. Maybe fine for home use.

There's not a lot of 'good' choices in the mid-range category, many manufacturers either cheap on build quality, or performance, or a combination of the two and end up compromising the device.

The Inspiron 13 is noted to have a fairly average display and it uses pulse-width modulation for backlight dimming. Basically the backlight switches on and off rapidly to give off less light.
This causes screen flickering when display is not on full brightness and sensitive users may feel eyestrain. Flickering was detected when screen was below 99 percent brightness.

However, the Yoga 460 seems to suffer from similar PWM flicker issues (at brightness below 50 percent), but the upside is that it's non-reflective matte display is easier to see in direct sunlight.

Inspiron also lost points for lack of USB ports, being heavy and also keyboard feeling mushy, while Yoga scores much better for IO ports, battery life and keyboard quality.

The Yoga is definitely more business oriented.

The great thing about the Dell it is the price to performance ratio, and $533 ($700 AUD) gets you the Core i5 model but no SSD), which I suppose is much cheaper than the Yoga 460 which retails for $700 USD (above your budget)

Another interesting product you should look into is the crowd-funded Eve V tablet which is like a much cheaper version of the MS Surface Pro. retails for 699.

    • And as disappointing that most that have made a suggestion haven't been acknowledged.

Anyhows, the Miix 320 suggested by tonyjzx is now on sale for $339.15.

      • user hasn't logged in since 18 hours ago so I guess he must've forgotten about the thread or too busy to read

anyway the Miix is very basic, i have a similar specced device with Atom X5 and 32GB of EMMC-based internal storage and I don't recommend it as an everyday use laptop. Definitely not the thing to get for things like Adobe Photoshop and MS Office (you will have not enough storage to fit both)

It's fine as a occasional device for media consumption (movies, reading PDF's and comics) but lack of on-disk space means you constantly have to worry about disk management.

        • But surely you dont expect a 10" tablet to be a decent Photoshop machine but I reckon Word and Excel etc to be fine.

ALso it has an sd slot.

This SKU has a 64/128gb option.

        • So, this couldn't run office (or an open source equivalent) and accounting software?
Scrimshaw, on behalf of everyone here… Thanks so much for your input… A comment from you pretty much = "end thread"

  • Hi Guys,

I did some more research and found two deals to choose from. Let me know which one you think best. My needs are just reliability (not crashing), browsing net, some very basic photo shop, laptop not heating up in length of use and a good battery life.

    1) Inspiron 13 inch 2 in 1 less than $500 USD in Dell USA website
    http://www.dell.com/en-us/work/shop/productdetails/inspiron-…

    2) HP Pavillion X30 Spectre at $429 USD in HP USA website

  • Any feedbacks ?

    • I recommend reading reviews online and making your own judgements. I've given you links to 3 different reviews,

You'll feel more comfortable about your purchase if you're the one who did the research, as opposed to just blindly taking a suggestion from some randoms on the internet.
