Trip to Japan

My family is planning to go to Japan somewhere from Dec 5-21 and we don't know where to start. This is our first trip to Japan. We plan to go to Tokyo-Osaka-Kyoto-Tokyo.

We need advice on how to travel from one city to another (cheapest option) and how to find decent clean accomodation that is not too overwhelming. We am bringing my son who Autism and he likes organised and clean and quiet places. We are not going to stay in Hilton or Conrad or any 5* Hotel this time because I am not working now so have to be on budget a little.

Can anyone give me some good advice please. Very much appreciated.

Regards

  • Train for travel was cheap and cheerful-especially the bullet trains-Japan National Rail Pass is what I had. Accommodation is best found through aggregate sites. Japan is organised and very clean … every large city is going to be noisy but Tokyo was fairly quiet during the night (in comparison to some SE Asian cities where all you hear is horns 24/7).

    • Thank you for the info. I know what you mean 24/7 horning. Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand etc. We had nightmare when we were travelling in Bali n Medan. Luckily, we came back alive!

  • Cheapest option is to take the night bus

was about $30aud to 60 each way

hotels combined for cheapest hotel options. Majority of accommodation found in japan is clean anyway, and much better than you'll get in aus for your buck.

search previous threads on japan trips, there is a search bar

    • Noted. Thanks. We thought of staying in Japanese traditional house at least let my son have a go. Any advice?

      • Check out rakutan travel as well. It provides a comparisons of all travel companies. We took a Tokyo —> Kyoto overnight bus on Friday night for 6000 yen adult/3000 yen for kids. Left at 11pm and arrived @ 6am. The night bus has full blackout curtains. There are also inexpensive domestic flights. I've booked Kagoshima to Narita one way for au$86 with jetstar. There are a couple of other low cost carriers. Check out a few different travel comparison websites to get the best price.

        • Thanks Altomic. I did browse thru rakutan travel. Thank you so much for the info. Where do you stay in Kyoto if I may ask?

  • Airbnb?

Also if you are going in the middle of winter, you can go skiing at one of the resorts. Maybe Hokkaido?

    • Oh no. Not skiing for first time in Japan. Maybe next trip. Thanks.

    • Any recommendation for skiing in Hokkaido?

  • When we went we used a JR rail pass to get from city to city and that was great. We also used Airbnb pretty much everywhere we went and had no problems. I can even recommend some places if you would like.

    • That will be great if you can name me some places which you think would b great to visit. Thank you so much.

  • +1

Airbnb. I'm currently staying in an old house in Osaka near Momodani station it's raining and I'm watching Japanese baseball on TV. The house is in an interesting area where the streets aren't grid patterned(thanks ww2 destruction)

    Hotels = sterile +lifeless.

    • Thanks. Enjoy your stay.
