Options for Current Optus Customer Post Paid not Under Contract

Hi All,

So my girlfriend has finished her contract with optus and is currently still paying the plan without the handset repayments, she wants to upgrade to the iPhone 7 (128GB) and each time we try the new optus plans they continually say its only for new customers not existing.

I spoke to the live chat and was told i could get the click frenzy deal when it was on, so we did that and never got the phone or plan and when we spoke to someone they said its not valid and was closed because she is an existing customer even though the live chat said she could get the new plan as an existing optus customer not under contract.

Basically what im after is what options does she have to get the iPhone 7 (128GB) on an optus plan she is happy to recontract we are just trying to find the cheapest option as money is tight.

I keep seeing these 20% off plans and payments yet can never utilize them as she is already an optus customer but not under contract.

Any help and advice would be much appreciated.

Regards,

Carpo

port her number to a prepaid account with vodafone or something for a month then all of a sudden she's a new optus customer and can sign up to a new deal

why not consider using someone other than optus? there are plenty of other optus resellers that would be far cheaper and still have the same coverage

  • Happy to see what others are like i assume i just port over the number to a reseller? apart from Telstra i haven't looked into other providers

Be careful. Optus new customer deals are restricted to New to network which means if you port from someone who uses the Optus network they do not consider you a new customer.

      • My wife just ported from Virgin to Optus to take advantage of the 25% off deal (which was for 'new services only') and had no issues.

        • Where as I had multiple friends who had issues.
Their terms and conditions strictly state New to network.

Cheapest option keep old phone choose a cheaper plan. If money is tight why are you getting a new iphone.

  • I'm getting the phone repaired (battery is faulty) its an iPhone 6 and it seems to be on its last legs hopefully the battery repair helps it.

The phone plan alone is $60 a month so she can afford $90 a month max including the phone repayments, i suggested keeping the phone for longer but she wants a new one probably because she is use to upgrading every 2 years

People are still using iphone 4, a faulty battery is hardly a indicator of a phone being on it's last legs.

To say tight on money and then opt for a 1.3k phone plan or not is pretty funny though

      • I'm not paying $1300 outright for the phone it would be via a plan and as far as im concerned once the battery is fixed on the iPhone 6 she should be fine.

She wants the iPhone 7 she doesn't need the iPhone 7..

Oh, well that makes it much cheaper.

    • I'm still using the iPhone 5 and since I had the battery replaced it's been perfect.

    • Would she consider to take the advantage of eofy offer?
      https://offer.optus.com.au/eofy/offers/
      72.75/m ,with 10gb data?

      I don't think there's a problem if she's an existing customer
      -just
Add New Phone and Plan, and she can still have 25% off

      • That's what I was attempting to do but live chat said yes then after I get a temp order number they auto cancel and say no it's new customers only. I'll try again and see how it goes btw the link for some reason isn't working..

        • I guess your girlfriend just need to get a free sim of other company to port out the number then apply it before 25th then..
Or use your mum's/dad's/your name to apply for it(if your are really want to

  • i usually buy mine outright and then just get a cheap plan. At the moment i use the $40 boost plan (Telstra) because i need the coverage for work. Previously i used Vaya (Optus 4G) when i was working in the city

  • I do the same i purchase outright and use telstra pre paid but at the moment we don't have the money to buy the phone outright so the only option is a plan, i'll continue to push the point of keeping the same phone longer, but i will look into a reseller for cheaper options.

If i were to port the number elsewhere how soon could i port it back to optus to get the discount? Is there a minimum like a month or anything like that?

    • If i were to port the number elsewhere how soon could i port it back to optus

Port outs during business hours to different providers take anywhere between 30 seconds and 4 hours. Once you've ported out then you can port back in immediately. Go and grab a $2 Vodafone SIM and port out to it, then get in touch with Optus (if that's who you decide to go with for the iPhone plan).

      • Good idea i'll look into that if we stick to optus or whoever we can get it cheaper with

Can often get those $2 sim for them for free from 7-11, or online directly from the telcos

  • Optus is very slow on queries and has not been easy to deal with in our case

  • I went BYO and havent looked back.

Im in the $70 per month online deal for 25gb data….

Byo plans are the best value for post paid but I never really like the prepaid scene… too mainstream for me.

Buying a phone outright & going prepaid plan makes the most $ sense.

    1. Pay less than $1300 for the phone outright.

    2. Prepaid plan is generally cheaper than the equivalent month to month postpaid plan with the same telco.

    3. By not being locked in a contact, she can benefit from future upgrades in the plans (prices are more likely to come down than go up) & can take advantage of future promotion.

    4. With prepaid, there is absolutely no chance that she'll go over her limit & incur ant extra charges.

By churning through introductory offers & discounted prepaid SIMs, I have been paying, on average, probably less than $15 (or even $10) per month for my mobile service since finishing my last contact a few years ago.

    • I'm doing it that way (purchase outright and on pre paid) and i suggested the same the only issue is the saving of the phone outright.

I think she will just have to live with using the same phone for longer while she saves up to move to the outright/pre paid option

  • Yea go for like kogan 14 gb only $25 a month and there's further trick to get that to around $20ish a month.

Then buy iphone 7 outright, from ebay while it's still 10% off or JB hifi, people sell discounted gift cards here and get TRS back.

    • Which Kogan plan is that? What is the trick to reduce it to $20ish?

I get discounted vouchers via work so i can utilize that
