Woodstock 39" Guitar from GraysOnline eBay - Good Buy for a Beginner?

Hey everyone,

I am really interested in learning to play a guitar and would like to teach myself to do so. However I am not sure which guitar I should go for tbh. I would like something that is not too expensive but is also good value for money. Something that produces good sound and would be ideal to start learning. I looked online and found that metallic strings are better than the nylon ones but other than that I am clueless.

I found this guitar on grays ebay: graysebay . I was planning on using the latest ebay 20% off code to get this one.

What do you guys think? Any help/suggestion would be really appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Learning any instrument is tricky, less so if you can already play something else.
With my kids we budget for lessons even for the ones who are keen and work stuff out themselves, otherwise it is very hard to maintain the regular work needed to improve.

The guitar you linked is adequate, but you will quickly seek to replace it with something better if you keep learning. It is also a classical guitar, meaning it has a wide neck suitable for picking out individual notes particularly, as opposed to a guitar with a narrower neck more designed for playing chords. I would prefer nylon strings for this type of guitar.

The one you linked will have no resale value, so bear that in mind, as it is what musicians will describe as "junk". That doesn't mean it isn't OK to play or learn on, just that it will be comparatively poorly made compared to other instruments.

My suggestion is to find a teacher and take an introductory lesson before you buy an instrument. They will be able to go through the differences to help you make a suitable choice.
My second suggestion is to buy a second hand instrument. These will typically be able to be resold for what you pay for it. My first guitar was a Yamaha acoustic steel string I have owned for 30 years. I could have sold it for about what I paid for it at any time since (so at a substantial loss inflation adjusted!)
All musicians I know would rather a better quality secondhand instrument in preference to a lesser quality new instrument.

    • First of all thank you for answering my question with all the details. I really appreciate it.

I used to play the piano when I was young but I have forgotten almost everything that I learnt. So it is basically me starting from scratch with zero experience, but I am ready to devote time to it and practice.

Sure, I will try to find someone to help me start learning. Thank you.

I completely agree with your statement about getting a good second hand guitar instead of new crappy one. But since I am new, I am not familiar with the brands or the types of guitar. Do you know of any that often appear on ebay for second hand and might be good as my first guitar? What is the rough price range to get a good quality second hand acoustic guitar?

      Thanks again. :)

      • Go have an intro lesson. You teacher will likely let you try a couple of guitars to see what they feel like. Post again with an update of what you have discovered then.
Good luck, and I hope you have fun.

        • hhmm.. ok. thanks. :)
