Car Hire Melbourne (Sports Car for 23 year old)

Any places where a 23 year old can rent a unique car to take to phillip island over a weekend?

Preferably looking for a manual roadster like an ND Mx-5 or similar.

  • Car dealership - book for a test drive

    • LMAO, that would be ideal.

  • Hertz do a Megane RS pretty cheap, not sure if there's age restrictions on it. Are you intending on taking it to the track? No rental company will allow that that I know of.

    • No, not to the track. Just to do some spirited driving around Victoria.

      • Are you going there from interstate? Victoria is the king of the nanny state. And if theres an event on then you can guarantee that cops will flood the area.

Insurance will the big killer for renting a car if you can even find one as under 25 they jack up the price for rental

You've obviously never been to NSW

        • @Drew22:

NSW is bad, but VIC is even worse

        • @k-rokfm:
          Not even close.

        • I'm flying down as part of a work trip. Would have ideally drove down myself but am unable to do so.

        • @Drew22: I live between both NSW and Vic (family in both states), and I can attest that NSW is much worse. Vic is the traffic camera capital, but NSW has way more cops in cars that are way more anal-retentive. I would see more cops in a week in NSW then I would see all year in Victoria. And anything is an excuse for a "double demerits" weekend in NSW…

        • @pegaxs:

But in Melbourne you're allowed outside and can drink after sun down, unlike Sydney.

        • @Drew22: I live near Newcastle and I seriously think lock out laws start at 5pm. I like going to Victoria, it gives me some time off from the NSW government running my life for me… :D

Was looking into this a couple of years ago for my 21st, but lack of full license kinda killed it.

    • I was looking into these two earlier, first has the ND as part of their fleed but have an age restriction of 25 and over unfortunately.

As for the second, the cars in my price range didn't really peak my interest (apart from the Z4 which appears to be in automatic).

  • It's a real bitch to hire a car when you're under 25. I went to Tassie a few years ago with my old man and the beefiest car we could hire was a Nissan Pulsar. Couldn't even hire a Ford Territory, which was kind of ironic since I drove my dad's (then brand new) Territory to the airport to catch the flight to Tasmania! So I don't like your chances of finding anything remotely exciting to drive.

    • When I was 21, I was able to hire a Commodore SS-V Redline from Thrifty. It just cost a lot more than what an over-25 driver would be charged.

  • Have you looked at any of the car-sharing websites?
    drivemycar.com.au or carnextdoor.com.au

Not sure if they restrict age though.

Gonna go with CarNextDoor, found an 86 for well below my budget.

Terms and Conditions listed on the site seem very fair too!

OP says outright he wants it for some "spirited driving". I wouldn't rent a performance car to him either - it's all too likely the car will end up making an intimate acquaintance with some Armco. Of course it'll then be "Geez I was unlucky - musta been oil on the road".

Years ago I was the next car behind a car which was head-onned by a young hoon who lost his muscle car on a blind corner. The idiot could almost walk away yet told me as I attended how unlucky he was. The family in the head-onned car was smashed (dad dead, mum critical, two young kids in the back traumatised mentally as well as physically). Ever since I have had no time at all for people who want to do "spirited driving" on the public roads.

Dude, take up track racing (bikes are affordable). You've every right to risk your own life for a thrill, but none at all to risk others.

  • There is a reason "spirited" driving cars are expensive to rent, let alone to 23yo's. Maybe a budget on how much you want to spend would help…

And I find it almost impossible to believe that going to PI that this vehicle would not be seeing a certain race track. If you are after an area to do some "spirited driving", there are a lot better places to go than down to PI. The drive down there is not that thrilling nor is driving around the roads when you get there (minus the GP circuit.) Now if you said you were going to Warrnambool via the Great Ocean Road, I would understand…

Also be aware that if you take the rental on a race track, you can kiss any insurance goodbye.
InB4: if we crash, we will just push it out on the road and claim it happened there… yeah, cause that would totally seem legit.

  • I fail to comprehend how stating that I wanted to do some spirited driving to PI and that I'm 23 years old automatically indicates that I'm stupid enough to take a rental car to the race track.

The reason for the trip to PI is because I have never been before nor did I intend to visit the track (have done Great Ocean Road previously). Considering the drive down is going to be multiple hundred kilometers, I simply wanted to enjoy the drive as opposed to being stuck in a crappy 20kw automatic rental car bored to death on the only trip I get away from corporate jail every year.

Disclaimer: I've never been in a crash or have lost points on my license. I'll make the assumption for myself that I'm a great driver with the logic of the above 2 posters. Oh and I live 10 minutes from SMSP in Sydney and attend on the regular. Thanks for the judgement.
