Need Recommendation on 5.1ch Speakers

I'm in the market for 5.1ch speakers for home theatre and have shortlisted these in no particular order:

Klipsch HD Theater 300 $560 delivered
Jamo A320HCS6 5.1 $699
Canton Movie 75 $799
Q Acoustics 7000 $600 but willing to take $500. Note that this isn't the 7000i, just 7000.

My budget would be around $700. I am told the Q Acoustics are terrific but they look horrible and a bit like Logitech. Canton is supposed to be well made and used to retail for around $1400. Klipsch has great reviews on Amazon. Jamo is ok as well but I heard it is hard to wall mount the speakers.

Any advice or other recommendations would be appreciated. If it's in second hand and in good condition I am open to it.

Ta.

Probs moot if you already have a amplifier

I got a Logitech Z-5500 all in one system. I got it brand new for $350 or something 7 years ago. Still makes the walls shake, no distortion or anything. Only complaint is that after a few years the lights behind lcd died so you can't see it at night but depending on how you feel, that's a good thing as well. Still read it ok in light conditions.

They don't make it anymore, it was succeeded by the Z-906 which I understand is less bassy. But some people say that the z-5500 were TOO bassy and the midrange were a bit weak.

Prices vary wildly but you can get the z906 for $350 from a variety of places.

Quite an attractive unit imho but i'm not gonna upgrade till they have lpcm input over hdmi.

I suggest you try to find some retail stores that have these setup and actually listen to them. Feedback from others is good, but everyone's hearing is different. What sounds good to them may be too tinny for you or too much bass (yes that's a thing).

  • The cheap Jamo speakers are horrible, you might try your luck with 2nd hand jansen speakers on gumtree……

I got 3x sets of 5.1 Jamo speakers from the cheaps ones which are all floor standing speakers to the mid and premium ones. All I can say by looking at the cute looking speakers you posted….it would be a waste of money paying $700 bucks for them.

    Get 2nd hand:

    Surround back (TANNOY) $150

Front Speakers (Jensen) $300 (Jensen speakers are amazing)

    Centre Speaker (Jensen) $150
    https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/zetland/speakers/jensen-cent…

Done! way better than any of the speakers you are planning to buy.

Don't forget to bargain :) you could save $100 -$300 depending on your bargaining skills.

    • Sorry just saw someone bought the front pair jensen speakers…..well at least I tried.

Those speakers ……you don't need a woofer well too late now unless you are a bass guy that like a continuous earth quake bass.

I have been a closet audiophile for 30+ years now with a healthy finger on the pulse of current AV market and new technologies. The best speakers on the market for the money in my humble opinion are anything designed by Andrew Jones. (Google them) There is a very good Pioneer range which sound unbelievable for the price and recently Andrew has been poached by European speaker manufacturer Elac.

Currently Grays online has a number of very good deals on centre and bookshelf models - including the new Dolby Atmos upward firing model.

    • Interesting design by Andrew Jones….will try them when I have a chance.

  • The Energy 5.1 Take Classic Home Theater System is best bang for buck.

  • Here's a better Klipsch I came across on Grays Online

    $659.05 + $19.95 delivery seems decent.

  • I popped into Rio last week and tested the Q Acoustics 7000i as well as the Canton 75. I was really impressed with the Q and thought I could get over the Logitech look similarity. Guy said he'd do it for $1300 (on sale now for $1399) but I managed to knock off another $100 so agreed for $1200 and left a deposit on the whites as they shouldn't stick out as much as the black ones on a white wall. I did go over my budget but unlike Amps or Projectors I don't think speakers will date as quickly so it's a better investment.

I also picked up an M3 Soundbar for $449 down from $599. This is the first time I have tested a soundbar and honestly didn't know much about them beforehand but boy do they make a difference to standard LED Tvs hung on a wall!
