Any Android Users Getting "Location Spam" Messages Recently

I have 3 Android devices. In the space of a day all 3 of them produced a popup after seemingly no actions on my part other than using the device. The popup asked me to turn location on with the appropriate Yes/Cancel message.

Location is the single most important piece of data to the world's largest internet advertising business Google who created Android in order to collect this information (along with every single other piece of data it can) about users in order to serve them unwanted advertising.

So I'm just wondering is this yet another annoyance from this wretched company that is widespread to other users or has there been some other confluence of events that caused me to see this message on 3 devices. (Or maybe I have some er "nice" malware :D

Do they really serve ads depending on our location? I haven't noticed that at all.
I have location enabled, I think most people would.

    • Its called Location based tracking/ads.

If you're in Japan for example they will send you ads with like Things to do in Japan and other related Japanese ads like tourism.

It's more than just helping Google to better serve ads, but a lot of services provided by Google also depend on people turning on location tracking on their phone. For example, Timeline / Traffic in Google Maps. Lots of "cards" on Google Now are also location dependant. By knowing the location & time of individuals, Google is able to craft very specific applications for their users. Some think that these features are very useful, but others think it is infringing their privacy.

So I'm just wondering is this yet another annoyance from this wretched company…

I believe you have already made up your mind, which is evident from your past forum posts against this company (example #1, #2). May I suggest you

    • Consolidate all the Google rant posts into one single thread.
    • Don't buy Android devices, or don't use Android with Google Play framework enabled.

      Just needs 1 telstra/google mega-whinge-thread ;)

      • Or just give up and move back to the Apple Eco-system…

    • Advice noted.

  • Got the popup about an hour ago. Thanks for the thread.

  • Yeah I got one a few hours ago on my mbox even with no Google account (removed it after installing what I needed). First time I've seen it.

  • Blame the goo-mint this time.

I did use to get blandishments from Google Photos to contribute my photos but they gave up after a while.
