Dupes for high end candles (like Glasshouse/Peppermint Grove)

So I love to have a candle or two burning in the evenings, especially in Winter :) My favourite scents are from Glasshouse and Peppermint Grove, and these candles run $40-$50 each for the big sizes.

I tend to try to Ozbargain a lot of things and I've tried finding cheaper alternatives but I've found it difficult to find anything with scents that I truly love. Are there any candle-loving ozbargainers out there with a favourite brand/scent of candle or place to get cheaper good-quality candles? This one luxury is figuratively burning a hole in my pocket!

Dan Samuels candles (Made In Australia) are sometimes $12 at QVB online and in Sydney and perhaps elsewhere. The French Pear is impressive.

Sometimes Yankee Candles are significantly reduced at Spotlight. Red Cross Charity shops have their in-house brand for $12. I suppose you have considered The Reject Shop. Coles used to stock Karma Senses candles, which were particularly good, and I once bought a couple of extra large candles there for $7.50. Have a look in Gumtree, because like fragrances, there is always someone trying to get rid of one.

Glasshouse you can get in duty free coming back into Australia so if you travel you can pick up a couple and save a little.

Ecoya I find just as lovely and although its full price is similar, I recall it being included in decent sales somewhere lately. I can't recall where it was but worth keeping an eye out for.

I know this doesn't really answer your question. I personally haven't found cheaper candles I like as much, although I haven't looked all that hard, just try to find good deals on the ones I like.

    • Thanks Chik5555! I've never though of getting candles in duty free, will definitely try that out next time I go overseas! And I've never tried Ecoya so I will track them down too.

I realized yesterday there are actually so many sales going on ATM! Dusk has heaps of things on sale for like over half price and is doing a 3 for 2 on top of that so that was awesome! And I found a Mozi Candle half price at Harris Scarf. I guess now is a good time for sales :)

Have you considered making your own? I got to go to a free class and it's so easy to make!

@cantoangel that's such a great idea! My SO's Mum went through a candle making phase a year aor two go and the ones she gave us smelt incredible, so maybe I could get her to teach me, or do a class. I guess it's one of those things that seems tricky but maybe once you learn it's easy?

Yep! It's more messy than anything lol. I haven't tried making it at home myself because I've got too many in storage still (ozsale etc) but yeah, it's literally a glass jar, a sticker and a wick that you attach to the sticker at the bottom. Then you pour in the wax!

That sounds so easy!!!! I'm going to try :D

So in case anyone is still following this, I found out about this candle supplies warehouse called eroma "https://www.eroma.com.au/"

They have locations in Sydney and Melbourne and post everywhere. They sell a candle -making kit for $29.95 for 6 candles when you use the code "SAVEONKITS" and it includes all the equipment you need and their 3 most popular scents (coconut lime, vanilla caramel and Japanese honeysuckle). The wax is beautiful quality soy wax and they give you a jug and proper thermometer and everything to do it. It took me less time than it does to cook dinner and it was surprising mess free! Needless to say I am totally hooked and have been back a couple of times with friends to get more fragrances and waxes and it's all for a fraction of the cost (and they smell WAY better than most of the cheaper paraffin wax candles. Anyway, I don't know if I will go back to buying candles after realising how easy it is to make them (unless I find a scent Eroma doesn't stock - but them stock like 500 fragrances and you can read reviews and stuff).

Hope this didn't come across as an ad for Eroma - I'm sure you could get supplies from anywhere - but if you are starting out, I found their candle making kit really good value!
