Buying a New Phone - Advice

Ok so originally I was looking at an Xperia XZ which now would be the perfect time as they've been price dropped to $699 because the new models are coming soon.

But the Xperia XZs which is a better model is coming, for only $100ish more and I wanted that model. Online stores like kogan have them for sale from $769 or as low as $650, but really I'd trust a physical store a lot more in terms of getting a legit version and warranty claims and such.

Are these online sites trustworthy? Does anyone know if places like jb hifi will even get the model (as I know they've passed over some in the past)?

This website has it for $649 but it feels too good to be true and I definitely don't want a cheap copy

Looks like you've already answered for yourself.

    • Not really, I want the better model but don't know if it's worth waiting too see if a physical store will actually get stock. I'm looking for help or people's experiences whether the online stores are trustworthy

      • I'm not sure about thinkofus however Kogan is legit.

        • I trust kogan, just not sure if they'd handle warranty claims fairly

  • Update: after searching on whirlpool forums it seems that thinkofus is in fact legit with the warehouse In NSW and repair locations in QLD and NSW. Their only thing that bothers me is a repair warranty instead of replacement

    • I guess that's the disadvantage of buying grey/imported stock. It's cheap but warranty could be a big pain. Try to buy big ticket items especially mobiles in AU as you will get 2 year warranty on mobile phones. I bought my previous phone online from China for $450 and haven't had any issues. It was a Chinese branded phone that I couldn't get in AU.

      • Had a chat with their customer support, they do 12 month on that model, and I'd have to mail it to a store in NSW as I'm in WA but that'd be the same thing for kogan too. The only phone I've had to get replaced under warranty was an xperia z1 ages ago for a hardware sound bug that was common in he early manufacture of the model.

That price is too good to beat though, might give it a try. Luckily they do 14 day full refunds too

  • Previous Sony owner, and in my opinion I would never get a grey import Sony handset. When I had my Z1/2/3's, which were all excellent phones, they each had to be replaced under warranty 2-3 times. I can't say for certain if the XZ range is any better in terms of build wise, but something to possibly think about

    • I had a Z1,Z2mini/Z5 and only ever had to replace the Z1. Had the Z2 mini for ~1 year and the Z5 for almost 2 now and had zero issues, especially after removing the telstra firmware.

If I want to be safe i might just keep my Z5 as a backup incase replacement/repair takes too long or until i'm sure this phone isn't a dud

      • My issues were hardware related. But that being said, FoneBiz is excellent to deal with. Usual turnaround was about a week

        • Do they just repair or do they sell phones? Wouldn't it void any warranty I get with wherever I buy from?

        • @Garltok:

I know that when I was dealing with them, they had a little kiosk at a shopping centre that sold accessories but as far as I know, they do not sell handsets

FoneBiz is an official repair centre for Sony

        • @supasaiyan:

Ok cheers, will take that into account

    • Same with my wife

  • Update for everyone. I've decided to take the safer bet and buy from kogan, as I've bought from them before and found them more reliable.

I talked to a telstra rep and Jb HiFi rep and both said there's no indication of Australia getting any stock in the near future anyway.

    Thanks for all your help
