Looking for a 4K HDR TV for Gaming ($1000 - $1300 Preferably)

Hey everyone, first post at OzBargain. Just need some guidance on a 4K TV for a PS4 Pro I purchased in the past month (went for the $299 PS4 Pro EB Games trade-in deal), there are some games I'm holding out on until I can experience them on a nice 4K HDR TV (particularly for me are Horizon Zero Dawn, Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted and the KH HD remixes). Apologies for the long post ahead.

I'm aware of rtings and I've done a fair amount of reading on 4K HDR itself but many of the TVs reviewed aren't even available here in AU. I guess I'm on the lookout for what's best in our current Australian market particularly in our EOFY period. It will be primarily used for PS4 pro gaming and Netflix/Stan streaming (movies in general I guess).

I think I can narrow it down to some specs that will suit me:
55"
4K + HDR10 (whatever the PS4 pro will utilise)
OLED not a necessity
60Hz at the minimum
Not fussed about newness of model (2015, 2016 model etc.)
Sound is not a factor as I will be investing in a sound system anyway
Fairly low input lag
Preferably in the $1000-1300 range but max at $1500 (I am a Uni student after all)

From what I hear, anything below 35ms input lag is considered good. However being used to 1ms on my VG248QE, I am not sure how I will respond and adjust to a slower response time. Anyone from a 1ms background have any insight on this? What response time/TV was okay for you?

I have looked around and found that the KS8000 seems to fit the bill for what I'm looking for. However, it is very hard to find any stock here in Melb and perhaps I just need to dig harder but I can't find any online. If there are any similar TVs to the KS8000 or any good 4K TV bargains this EOFY, please help me out!

All help will be appreciated :)

I own the UH615T LG and been quite happy, its no OLED masterpiece buts its a fairly good gaming TV

    100hz 4K UHD chroma 4:4:4
I play competitive overwatch on it and it works fine with my Xbox One S, in all honesty, never experienced input lag, being on the FTTP NBN probably helps this dramatically too
You want a tv that does at least Game Mode

    PC gaming is also fine

I also own an Epson 1080p projector which is about 25-30ms lag from memory and its been fine too
1ms is a gtg time btw, you can't really compare a gaming monitor to a TV, two seperate technologies completely
Anyone that says there is a difference between 1ms and 35ms are usually full of sh!t and clueless and will always find something to blame their crap gaming ability on
If you are serious about gaming then a CRT is about as true as you're going to get to "lag free" and input free processing lag

    • Anyone that says there is a difference between 1ms and 35ms are usually full of sh!t and clueless

OK but then there are the pro gamers who say it as well.

      • Yeah - and they're full of absolute shit - that's Shawncro's point.

          Exactly ThithLord
I played on 56k for years
4 digit steam account and earnt a rep in the community
Gamers today think their e-sports is an excuse to not do job search and mooch off centrelink, a professional gamer dedicates their lives to a game and more often than not is sponsored, a 12yo kid playing overwatch isn't a professional gamer, not when they use every excuse, lag, interner speed or blaming their equipment when they don't realise the shit player is 9/10 times themselves

          How I see it

Refresh Rate - 60hz will be fine for most people, the higher then number the better the Frame Per Seconds updating - now 60hz = 60fps, if you are console gaming then no point buying a 200hz TV, you won't get 200fps but you will see the benefit in less ghosting and better general tv viewing

Response time - What I like to call the time between you performing an Action and the TV / Monitor reacting to this action, most TV sets average between 30ms to 100ms of input lag, You will really need a TV that has game mode or low input lag mode to remove any pre / post processing that the device does, this is where I say professinal gamers are full of shit, they buy a monitor with a 1ms GTG (Grey to Grey) response time and go OMFG Im so elite and I am going to dominate, only to find that 1ms is now more like 15-20ms of processing with WTG (white to grey) and WTB (White to Black) unfortunately in the LCD world, this is unavoidable due to the science behind each pixel switching etc, Marketing Hype and Bullshit is where most people go wrong, you want a TV to have the lowest input lag present for gaming, it will still be at least 10-20ms, you can't get around this

In all honesty, go with a low input lag / what you can afford setup
TVs unfortunately suffer too much processing delay for my liking but at the end of the day 20-40ms of input lag is more than good enough on a tv set

      • Pro Gamers - What you mean the screaming 16yo kid next door who plays overwatch
That game has serious shit hitbox and registration issues and for me who is a professional countrstrike gamer I can tell you even when I have 100ms of delay I still dominate the matches.
But in all seriousness any gamer worth their salt will play to the equipment
A poor trades person always blames their tools, skilled gamers play in a variety of contrasting situations
Any true Gamer will always tell you CRT will always reign over LCD technology, although with Gsync and Freesync coming along well it may be the game changing (no pun intended) LCD needs to push the same frames as CRT technology, unfortunately Refresh rates and GTG and LCD technology will never be the same as CRT, just due the fact pixels need to switch vs CRT firing directly to the screen in a vaccum, instant changes to your image vs an electronic delay caused by the LCD switching method

  • Hey Khriso, I've also spent a bit of time looking at the exact same thing, same spec requirements, same budget, for the same purpose. The TVs on Rtings often are available in Australia just under a different model number. The Samsung UA55KS8000W that you mentioned is probably my top choice if it goes on sale again soon. Other models worth keeping an eye on are the Samsung UA55KU6000W and Sony Bravia KD55X7000D

Take a look at the Hisense 55" 55M7000 or if your budget stretches a little further the 65" 65M7000.

    https://www.avforums.com/review/hisense-h65m7000-uhd-4k-hdr-…

"At this price point there really is nothing else that comes close to the M7000 in terms of build quality, features, performance and price."

  • Hi everyone, thanks for the comments. @shawncro the UH615T looks good. @Stix, that M7000 looks exceptional as well.
And @scruffypuppy, thanks for that, I was looking at the 7000d as well but Rtings have picked up some negatives on it such as image retention - for me I think that will be one of the last TVs to consider before I buy one before the end of the month.

Just for the UH615T and Hisense M7000, is there any place with a particularly good sale on them? Please link :)

    • Keep an eye on JB HiFi's site.

  • Bought a refurb KS8000 from Audioland with eBay's CHOPCHOP 15% off code, ended up being $1,486.65 + free shipping. Says it should arrive between 16-20 June to Melb.

First time taking the plunge on a refurb, hopefully all goes well. Will update.

I have purchased refurbs in the US and they have been great backed with manufacturer 12 month warranties so you should be fine.

Apart from these I would have suggested SONIQ as a cheaper option. I dont have a 4K but have a 1080p and so far I have been happy with my purchase.

    • Nice, am in the exact same boat and will be looking to purchase one in a few months.

Was looking at a couple of the refurbed 65inch as well so tempting!

Let us know how your experience go…

    • Let us know what it's like. I'm thinking about doing the same thing

  • +1

Nice one hope it goes well mate

  • Hey everyone, just want to update you all. The TV came in yesterday and it seems to be all in working order. It was packaged just like it was brand-new and there are no discernable scratches or even any signs of use. If all Samsung refurbs like this I can recommend.

Obviously I don't have a brand new or 'original' KS8000 to really compare the refurb to but after playing around with it for the whole day, including my YAS-106 soundbar (like a true ozbargainer) that came in too, it really seems to be like its 'original' counterpart.

While I'm not the biggest videophile I can say that the picture quality is pretty damn good, I'm sure there is more tweaking needed to be done (which I will probably inquire about in a seperate thread). Regardless, big thumbs up to Audioland for providing a speedy delivery and the KS8000 is great.

    • Nice how much did you pay for it and from where?

I am now also again in the market for this albeit maybe 65" minimum for mend am looking at the M7000 KS8000 and changhong and some others. So far I haven't found any good recent deals and am always looking for good and bad user inputs/reviews especially after hearing of so many bad reviews especially the aldi ones.

  • FYI… Schooling you in LED 4K TVs

Dont buy the OLED hype as they have burn in, color bleed problems still and also while it has blacks, they are not bright at 800nits (600 tested), half that of LED?QLED

4K HDR10 is worth having, its a small difference but its worth buying a TV for if you have netflix/foxtel/prime/stan
Next ALL side lit Tvs suck monkeys balls, the edge lit TVs means sucky black and always banding on solid colours!

So backlit is the way to go is the Panasonic 65” TH65EX600A 4K Ultra HD TV with 20% off with code PREWINTER on ebay

QLEDs are all side lit until the new Q9/Q8 Samsungs come out. But they are going to be damned expensive (even a premium over OLEDs it seems)
But if top draw is on the cards its where Id be putting my money.

Info is free ; best deal is a 55" curved Kogan on eBay for $620 delivered… Also smart tvs suck, buy an xbox/ps4

    • What is the cheapest 55 inch 4 tv with HDR and what is one that is good for gaming same size?

      I know for 75" with HDR it's a hisense 75N5 I think or 75N6 around $1700 AUD delivered
