My Challenge "No Buy July"

No Buy July

We all buy sh!t that we see on special that we can live without because it is on ozbargain and everyone else is buying it

It's time to take a stand

Join me in "No Buy July"

do you really need a $2 Guitar Tuner if you don't have a guitar and already have 5 x Guitar Tuners?

Do you really need more headphones, you already have 5 unopened in the desk drawer ..

Can you resist?

Take note of the item/s your were going to buy because it was a bargain, buy but don't really need it, and check at the end of the month how much you saved this month.

It's not July yet, so you haven't failed yet!

What are doing on OZB if you are not planning to buy anything? Don't increase the site traffic, please.

    • +2

I guess the challenge is don't buy something you don't need, you are free to buy something you need if it is on bargain.

      • +1

Agree. I hardly spend on something I don't need - most of my spendings go towards groceries, rent, phone bill… for basic survival… Just hunting for offers on OzB like gift cards for signing up insurance is good tho!

I think your problem is buying 5 of everything you don't need.

Some deals/bargains don't stick around. A better approach is just buying something that you would like in a reasonable quantity, and don't spend above your means.

Good luck on your challenge neverthless.

    • Hmm…I see what you mean and I understand. If things are low value and useful, I might buy a few to give friends. and have spares at work and home.

I bought 5 pairs of few cheap xiaomi headphones because I keep losing them or having them in the wash. (they usually survive the washing machine at least twice.

My friend's advice is: good deals come and go. you dont have to catch every single one. Which is usually true.

    It's a trap!
I think op missed one of the deals and trying to reduce the buyers number next deal coming!

    • +1

      Yeah, nice try Broden.

    • Yep, I'm looking at this after just missing the feeding frenzy on the Xiaomi Hybrids…

  • Challenged accepted.

  • My new years resolution 2017 was to not buy unnecessary stuff this year. So far it has been reasonable successfully. I should do better though. I will have to adopt a steely resolve for the rest of the year.

  • I'm in. This will go well with my Plastic Free July.

    • Interesting. How plastic free are you aiming for? just no bag? or no plastic packaging as well?

      • +2

        No credit or debit cards?

      • I always bring my own bags and recycle my soft plastic packaging through the red cycle program but for July I'm aiming to refuse all plastic packaging.

        • Now this is definitely a challenge. Will this include all plastics? Or just consumables?

I think going a day without touching plastic would be another challenge. Can't get in most cars, can't use many electrical devices. Can't even turn on my gas stove!

        • +2

@rompastompa: Plastic itself is not inherently evil. Especially plastic which is used in a long-term consumer product e.g. the button on your gas stove. But excessive plastic packaging and plastic bags in particular are all something we should try and reduce (or refuse) using.

        • +2

          @rompastompa:

I will be mainly focused on refusing soft plastics from groceries. This is going to mean a lot of home cooking and shopping at Farmers Markets. For a while now I have been gradually refusing and reducing my soft plastic groceries from Aldi/Woolies/Coles but for July I am looking forward to the extreme challenge of zero soft plastics. If you google "zero waste" you will discover a nice community of people who do this and very happy to share.

I have a feeling if I tried this I would end up spending 50% more in June and 50% more in August.

  • Bit of a Hump to get over first.

    • +1

hey, it aint "no buy june"
still got 2 weeks to buy sh!t

  • Okay I'm in. I guess that rules out all junk food deals…..

  • No. The relentless pursuit of bargains is a year-round endeavour.

  • Actually OP a more challenging slogan for you could be No OzBargain July. See you in August. ;)

You're starting to sound a lot like my wife mate.

I'm in. The problem is the more I resist shopping, the more I buy.

My solution is to avoid online shopping altogether.

Honestly after years here I've learned to never buy anything I didn't already need & think about buying. It's saved me thousands by now I reckon.
