How to Stop The Smell of Musty Work Boots

Not sure where to put this in the forums, so here will do.

Firstly I don't have sweaty feet. I've never suffered from smelly feet in my life. A few months ago I bought some work boots and they smell and make my socks smell. My feet don't sweat in them, and they don't get damp but have a musty damp smell.

So far I've just bought odor eater inner sole things from Kmart and they haven't done anything. I've also tried spraying deodorant in them, but that hasn't done anything either.

So does anyone have any idea how to combat this?

I tried the local bikies but they said they can't help in this instance.

Your feet does always sweat a little, what might be happening is that your boots got damp and didn't get a chance to air out. Like you put them straight into your shoe cupboard after wearing them or something.

Soak in a bucket of 60 degree water with some Dettol (strong anti-mould solution) and see if that gets rid of the smell. Make sure they're fully dry afterwards, get a fan and put the boots sideways so the air can get in and dry the lining.

    • They may sweat a little, but my feet are so dry I get cracked soles often! I think water may have gotten into them at some stage (I do have a couple of holes in the soles from treading on nails…) so perhaps they got some mould as you suggest. I'm a bit worried about soaking them though, as they will never dry being winter down here in Tassie!

  • Your coworkers are pranking you by putting some musty substance into your boots

Maybe bicab soda in them for a fair few hours?

      I'll try some bicarb tonight.

  • Put them in a plastic bag and in the freezer overnight.

buy another pair and rotate everyday, gives the other pair a day to air out.

  • Natures Miracle? http://www.natures-miracle.com/
It's supposed to be enzyme based and eat up smelly bacteria. Designed for dog pee though

The type of socks can a part too. Synthetic socks like football socks will make your feet sweat, natural based socks like wool or cotton are better for foot health.

  • I put talcum powder in my shoes when they smell; however, it might be worth looking at something like activated charcoal - apparently it is pretty cheap from aquarium places and should remove the smell and, hopefully, some of the damp. Just wondering if something like Glen20 might help.

    • Hi, thanks for the reply. I put some baking soda in last night and it seemed to help a little, but the smell was still there this morning. I then sprayed a heap of Glen20 in this morning and it seems to have helped a lot.

      • The Glen20 is meant to kill germs so, hopefully, it is dealing with the source of the issue. Hopefully it will do the trick.

    NZ Product
Best thing you will ever do.
I suffered from a similar issue, friend of mine from NZ who lives here had some of this and gave it to me.
You sprinkle a bit in the bottom of your shoes and you wont have smell issues.

Not sure if link is best place to buy it, but just wanted to show what the product was.

  • I noticed today after walking on the wet lawn out front my toes started to feel damp and cold. So I guess the nail holes in my boot are sucking in moisture and is probably the main cause of the mustiness. So now I have to find the nail holes. I had a quick look but couldn't find them. I'm busy with work to look properly so I'll look later. I wonder if bathroom silicone will work if I can find the hole and really get it in there?
