Phone that works well both in Australia and the U.S.

Hi guys,

Can anyone suggest a (hopefully, inexpensive) phone that supports both the Australian (preferably, Optus) and American (T-mobile, AT&T) 3G & 4G networks?

It seems that most of the phones on the market are designed for a specific region.

Just an example:
A recent deal on OzBargain: Optus Oppo F1s $209 @ BigW https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/313120

The phone works very well in Australia, but is almost useless in the U.S. (see the pictures)

(thanks to WillMyPhoneWork for the info. I'm not affiliated with the website in any way)

Thanks

  • What's your budget? Sometimes cheap models will have cut corners like not having all bands, and some manufacturers keep cost down to only have the bands that suit the region they are based (e.g. Chinese androids not having all Australian/international bands, but are perfectly serviceable in China/Asia)

    • Thank you for your reply!

I was naive enough to hope that I might find something around ~ $250.
Seems it's more difficult than I expected.

  • If you know the Aus and US bands you need, you can do a search on GSMarena for phones which have specific bands.

An old iPhone will be the other option.

    • Thank you for the advice! I've just tried that.
Unfortunately, it doesn't work 100% well… After selecting all the Optus, T-Mobile and AT&T 4G bands, it showed me a list of phones. LG G5 was one of them. http://www.gsmarena.com/results.php3?s4Gs=1,2,3,4,5,7,12,17,…
It seems there are approximately 1 million :) different regional variations of the phone with different bands supported. So, they are different in Australia and the U.S…

And you're right about iPhones. They have good results on http://willmyphonework.net/
      Thanks
