MyRepublic - Are They Any Good?

Hey guys, wanting to get NBN hooked up but my area is about a month away from being activated.

currently on adsl2+ and about 500m from the exchange so speeds are pretty good.

Telstra can hook up a cable service but want to charge $100 a month

TPG are offering 12/1 nbn connection for $60 a month with boost upgrades… at cost

Seen some posts on myrepublic but are they any good? can someone vouch for them or tell me the pros and cons on their 100/40 deal - maybe even the gaming one or any discounted offers or hacks that could be equal to their current offerings of something better.

Just wanted to get a kick ass connection and not spend a fortune on it it - upload would be important as i tend to upload alot of video files and they are usually 200_ mb so it would be handy - gaming not so much important as i dont do that often.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

thank you
-Erik

  • With the way NBN works, your mileage will vary.

Discount ISP's oversubscribe (*) to make sure they turn a profit, but cannot do anything about slow speeds until a) the issues solve themselves when enough customers get fed up and leave or b) they decide to upgrade the CVC backhaul to increase service capacity in that particular geographical region.

So your experience will vary depending on where you live and which POI your house hangs off of — pick the short straw and you get congestion / high latency but if you're lucky you might not have to complain.

(POI means point of interconnect - explained here )

(Oversubscribe means taking on more customers than your network can ideally handle at peak hours).

  • I don't know how close my adress is to the exchange but with the 100/40 I'm living the dream right now. A 30 gb game downloads in 4 hours its amazing. Only had it for a bit more than one month so cannot give you long term review but so far it's been amazing. LOL ping is fine too around 25 but when 4 people use it, it does occasionally spike to 100 which is annoying but bearable. Haven't noticed any speed reductions since the installation date and setup was a painless proccess as we already had an NBN box installed so when we got hom ethe new internet was ready to go just plug and play with the modem. Hope my review was helpful and 100 down for 59 a month is a kickass price!

  • Different locations different levels of congestion.
So no one can tell you what speeds you will get unless you as in the same location as others.

Here is my Myrepublic FTTP speed test.
    http://beta.speedtest.net/result/6384713050.png
8:40 pm in the middle of peak hours.

I'm located in Penrith NSW and suffer no congestion.

  • I'm on MR. Speeds during peak hours ~7pm-9pm are pathetic, like 5/2. A lot of throttling and traffic prioritisation is happening, e.g. YouTube is working brilliantly, but less known web sites are dead-slow. Torrents are literally turned off at peak times.

Out of peak hours I'm getting 75/35 which is my VDSL sync speed, no complaints here.

  • Im with Myrepublic and although I got great internet speeds and ping during the first 3 months, recently during peak hour times of 5pm-10pm the service has been unusable especially for gaming. It works great outside of those times with 100mbs downloads but if you would be mainly using the internet between these times I would strongly suggest to stay away from my republic

  • I use myrepublic and so far so good. I can't comment on pings but downloads and streaming work fine. Bargain imo for what you get

  • Signed up to MyRepublic but haven't been impressed so far. They sent out the modem, and no communication whatsoever. No install date, nothing. Had to ring them to get an install date, and it wasn't flexible at all.

  • MyRepublic finally got activated at my place. Yeah communication is rubbish, they don't email you updates/have live chat. I just made sure not to cancel my existing internet. For the price, I thought it wasnt' worth venting about.

During the week it's normally 80-95MB/s. Ping not great (14-16ms).

  • Can only vouch for FTTP but yeah, pretty good, the occasional congestion at peak time but mostly as fast and reliable as a greased whippet.

FTTN (VDSL2) is pants whichever way you look at it or SP you pick though so you will be disappointed if you are expecting a huge leap in speed on copper NBN.

BTW I was an early adopter nearly, 7 months on MR now.

  • I signed up with them about 4 months ago, new hfc node (cheltenhm area VIC).

Installation exhibited poor communication, but it happened eventually.

First month was great, 100/40 all the time.

But my area only just came online, so to be expected uncongested.

next month was horrific ping times and download/upload speeds. Like 180ms during peak. (30 during other times).

Phone support ALWAYS takes a minimum ABSOLUTE minimum 40 minutes on hold (at least assuming you have a job and can't go on at 10am, and only get a 20 minute wait time).

I was only calling to complain about lag, so I had to call at peak so they could believe my reports.

I also emailed them, and about 2 weeks later got a reply telling me my report of poor peak speeds was unacceptable and I should call support.

About 3 days after this email my peakhour speeds returned to normal. Obviously they had just ordered more capacity to the node.

So, it has been great since then (about a month). And I am now monitoring religiously so that when it begins to go south again I can get them to rectify asap.

Would I go with them again? Possibly not. But as you say their price is pretty good, and speeds are fine as long as you can get them to action your issues.

Note: they only currently peer in Sydney (they claim they will get more peer locations in time), so your latency might be slightly worse than a larger isp if you aren't in Sydney. (I'm in Melbourne and my minimum ping is 25ms fwiw, I have seen Telstra cable users report sub 10 and even sub 5ms pings)

Give me a shout if you have any more questions. I am basically happy now, with a rough patch to start with.

  • appreciate the feedback on this guys
