Warranty Claim on Samsung SSD Purchased Overseas

So I'm a bit frustrated here.

About a month ago, my Samsung SSD carked it. Unlucky, I'd only purchased it a year prior. I check the warranty, Samsung says five years (http://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/ssd/support/wa…). Great. They give me an RMA, I pack it up, and send it to Samsung in NSW.

They return it, stating the SSD unit is not Australian stock, and they only provide remedy for Australian stock.

I forgot I'd purchased it from Play-Asia. Fair enough, I'll get in touch with Play-Asia (www.play-asia.com). Apparently located in HK. Their reply is:

Unfortunately, we cannot proceed with the claim because the warranty of your item is only for 6 months. You may check further information on this site: https://www.play-asia.com/info/helpwarranty

I've gone back and forth with Play-Asia several times, each time linking the Samsung page which shows a five year warranty regardless where you bought it. They continue telling me their policy is six months only.

I know in Australia this wouldn't fly, but overseas, not so sure. I've emailed the Consumer Council in HK and am awaiting a reply.

At the same time, I'm trying to figure out from where the SSD originated, so I can claim with the correct Samsung. Play-Asia said they don't know where it came from, and I sent the serial to Samsung AU and am awaiting a reply.

Anyone have any ideas for me?

  • Does the serial number provide any clues as to place of Manufacture?

    • I don't think so. However, you got me looking carefully and it says "Product of China" on the back. So thanks. Getting a warranty from China might be tough…

      • It most likely means that it was made in China, which doesn't necessarily mean you have to get the warranty from there.

        • yeah oops… duh.

Well, this is the serial: S2RBNXBH205518V. I can't make anything of it.

If you paid with CC, check your policy for purchase protection.

    • Hmm I paid with Paypal. Checking out the details now.
