Advice on Car Purchase - Ford Territory

I am looking to purchase 7 seater car and budget is only $7500 at this stage. I saw 2005 Ford Territory TX (4 speed automatic) at a dealer who also does auction. They have offered me price of $5800. Is it good price based on the following conditions?

Pros:

Odometer reading at 110,000
Very clean interior and exterior
Good Power (Did test drive for 12Km)
Already did PPSR check and no issue was identified

Cons:
Roof is Sagging
Brakes are making noise
2 months registration left
There are some oil leaks One Two

Agreement with the dealer:

1) Put new car roof lining
2) Put new brakes
3) Oil leak will be fixed. The dealer is saying the power steering oil seal appears to be leaking
4) Pink slip

TDLR: Am I getting car for a reasonable price?

Comments

  • The price appears to be reasonable. The I6 engine is quite robust and can take more kms easily.

Try to find the 6 speed box if possible, strong gearbox

How old are the kids that you really need a 7 seater?

Other option could be a Kia Grand Carnival (not the standard Carnival, that has issues)

    • This!!
      Don't get a territory that isn't 6 speed.
The original gearbox is rubbish and there is a reason ford replaced it… they break… a lot!

    I wouldn't buy it.

No guarantee the repairs will be of a high quality to last well beyong the limited guarantee the car dealer provides.

Keep looking. Maybe a Mitsubishi Outlander as the Ford Territory had a lot of mechanical issues back around 2005 to 2009

    • Yeah but look at the kms on offer for the budget! Might be a Toyota but it still has an expiry of sorts

    1) Put new car roof lining

get the dealer to fix this before signing the contract.

      Definitely this!!
Do not let them talk your into buying then bringing back later for the repairs.. it will only result in a lot of stuffing around.

Pretty sure Ford design the roof liner to sag so that it can keep your head warm after it starts to bald from all the repairs.

If you do go ahead do not be complacent about the oil leak. It is entirely possible that a dodgy dealer could just clean the engine bay and tell you the fixed the leak.

$5800 isn't a lot of money for a car so you can expect it isn't going to be faultless, but a territory is a pretty basic bit of gear at heart and should be fairly cheap to get parts for (excepting the auto box as pointed out above)

  • You could probably get a fairly new, previous shape Kia Rondo7 at auction for that price. 2010 - 2012 models go for around the 6,500 before rego and roadworthy. Rear seats are only really for kids but you'll find the Territory is much the same. Definitely won't be as powerful but that's the sort of sacrifice you make at that budget getting something 5-7 years newer, they're pretty reliable too sharing mechanicals with the same era i30.

You could probably also find a Toyota Avensis Verso in your budget which is a bit bigger and you can fit 7 adults but it will be a few years older than the Rondo and it is much harder to find examples that haven't done massive mileage.

  • Get a mechanic to give it the once over and don't Ford Territory's suffer from premature ball joint wear or have they come up with a fix?

  • Hard to know with cars that old, but you need to get a benchmark.

To do this, I would test drive 3 or 4 cars of the same model to get a feel for the car.

Once you do this, you'll be amazed at the difference in how they all drive and the general feel behind the wheel. You're just going to have a better gauge of vehicle responsiveness, steering, suspension etc. it's an interesting exercise.

With these types of purchases, it's less about the lowest price and more about getting the least problems within your budget.

You may find you prefer a $6,500 - $7,000 car over the $5,800 based on going for a few test drives.

    Hope this helps :)

  • Ended up buying this car. Can someone guide me with optimal pressure for 20inch tyres?
Google is not showing any valuable information.

The manual only states about standard 17inch tyres.
