If your mum is older, you really need to talk to her before getting her a mobile phone. You need to find out how comfortable she is with technology - e.g. even people who use a computer (which my mum does, and quite well), have a really difficult time with phones. Maybe the display is too small, maybe there are too many buttons, maybe they really don't want to learn how to use something they see as useless.

Figure out what she would like - a clean, simple phone that's going to set you back about $50, with no camera/no playback capabilites, which has a fairly long battery life so she doesn't have to worry about charging it often, or some awesome modern phone which might be a learning curve for her…

My monther has an iphone 4, she is 60 years old. Oh god how I wish I didn't recommend that phone to her. She calls me every 5 minutes asking "how do I do this, how do I do that?"

Point is, take em's advice and talk to her first. I can give you an old phone for free to give your mummy.

  • I just love how you've referred to your mother as "monther", "momther", "mom" and "mother" all in one post !

  • If your mum is Asian (and I'm guessing she is, since you're celebrating the Mid Autumn Festival)… I'd recommend an iphone because it's multi-language capable. She'll be able to to change the phone display language to Chinese (simplified and traditional), Japanese, Korean or Vietnamese (and many others). And the best thing about it is that she'll also be able to INPUT in those languages easily by drawing the characters with her finger. No need to learn phonetics! Just write and send, and it will be in her home language. Plus, iphones are so easy to learn to use.

I thought moon cakes would be a good present for Mid Autumn Festival? ;)

i think smart phones are too complicated… choose a simple bar phone with really big number display.

  • Hey lovedeals-I'm over 60 and i have an iPhone. Can I have your number to ask you stuff as my daughter no longer answers my calls :(

  • @strawberry1120 — As you have already disclosed yourself as from Shenzhen in China, there are lots of "Shanzai" iPhone knock offs that you can buy from the factories next door to you. No point to start a thread here in OzBargain with an aim to post your link later.
