PC Build for Internet/3D Cad

Hey guys

Im looking at building a PC

Primary use internet surfing and occasionally Learning Autocad (For 3d printer).
No gaming.

So i Currently have 4x2TB hard drives
460w power supply and case
Hd Monitor
keyboard mouse

I've been looking at these Ryzen cpu chips, but not sure which cpu to go for or motherboard to go with it.

Also do i have to use a Graphics card or will the motherboard gpu do for 3d Cad?

Also recommended amount of ram? I may run some Virtual machines.

    • Should also recommend a GPU, as the rendering process for 3D graphics when detailed can be taxing.
      I'd say look at the; $250 RX470 <-> GTX 1060 (6GB) $350, that's probably the Value Sweet Spot.

      You won't really need a GTX 980Ti/GTX 1070/GTX 1080/GTX 1080Ti/GTX Titan/Vega… not unless you're working for Pixar.

      • Eh, never heard of needing a GPU for autocad but I'll take your word for it.

Good luck finding an AMD card though, better go with a 1060.

        • Well, you can do basic 3D modelling on the iGPU no problem.
But someone who's doing this more seriously, serious enough to ask on OzB, would probably need the dGPU.

Usually the Fire Pro and Quadro's are the GPUs recommended for this task.
They need to be "fast enough" but its more important to have lots of Video Memory, and support as many standards as possible so that the 3D modelling programs you want/will need can use hardware acceleration properly.
I generally recommend Nvidia over AMD when it comes to this.

However, since the Quadro (and to a lesser extent Fire Pro) cards are pretty weak compared to their asking price… you're better served getting a "Gaming" gpu instead. I mean an RX470 isn't for games, it's for graphics, but you get my drift. Those cards will usually cost a little more than Quadro's, but provide a much larger performance boost. And they will hold their resale value much better, making it better value in the long-run as well. The fact that they "can game" is just a bonus for the OP, not that you can't game on a Fire Pro etc etc.

Two-four years ago I would've just recommended the Quadro. They outperformed the Gaming GPU's for non-gaming graphical tasks. This was basically because the Quadro's back then were fairly competitive hardware wise, and they had highly optimised drivers. Also the GTX 600 and GTX 700 series were weak. While AMD's GCN cards were quite more capable hardware wise, they had lot's of driver issues. Basically the GTX 970 changed that with support for many standards, powerful hardware, and much improved drivers.

So at the minimum look for a cheap GTX 970, at the middle look for a used/recent Nvidia Quadro, and at the high-end look for a GTX 1060 (6GB). I think the RX470 might surprise a lot of people too, but with it your mileage may vary….
