Sony A6000 with 16-50mm Lens Kit $719.08 @ Ryda-Online eBay

70
CTAX20

Has been cheaper before, but at this price it's still pretty damn good.

Mate of mine has one and it's an awesome camera. Would make a good EOFY excuse.

  • Any deals on the A7 range?

  • Which one between this one and the Oly OM 10 or OM5?
I prefer form factor of the Olympus and generally more lenses are available and they seem to be cheaper.

    • +2

I had this same dilemma in Jan, ended up going for the olympus em10 mark ii, amazing camera and works perfectly for someone who's a novice/amateur in photography - good to learn with.
Whichever you choose all will do a goood job
all have pros and negs, personally the more lenses and cheaper pushed me to olympus

      • Thanks. I will probably go for the Olympus. New dilemma is… om5 or om10 :)

      • Hi eltito, I have no idea where to ask so I will do it here.

        I can get the
        -Olympus E M10 + 14 42 EZ for $830
        -Olympus E M5 + 45 mm F 1.8 + 14-150 mm for $1500 approx.
        What are your suggestions/thoughts?
I know, it depends on what I shot, answer is I like pretty much everything.
        Cheers :)

        • I'm a novice in this field, so take my opinion with a grain of salt haha.
I'd go for the em10 mark ii, the price isn't bad for what you get. The em 5 (from what you've written) is almost double in price, and yes it has two lenses attached, but I'm sure you can find a second good lens for the em10 mark ii (especially something like a prime lens), with its stock lens and the camera itself and still be cheaper. In saying that, it also depends if money is a factor for you. If you're a novice, I think the em10 will be fine, and once you start learning it well, and understanding photography fundamentals and turn into some what of a intermediate photographer, you'll probably start looking at DSLR or even other new mirrorless cameras that have come out in that time - and by you being more knowledgeable in the future, you might even look at completely different brands etc.

In saying that there is a good deal at the moment on a sony camera A6000 on ozbargain: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/314405

I'd personally suggest to ask on the following forums as the people there are quite helpful:
          https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum/132 (whirlpool photography forums)
https://www.dpreview.com/forums/1041 (this is the link to the micro four thirds forum, but there are heaps of other forums within DPreview which might help)

          Good luck =)

        • @eltito:
          Thanks.
Ì can actually get the m5 above kit for 1699 minus 20% eBay minus gst as I'm travelling oversees soon.

Will your advice stay the same?
I'm not a novice but not even a pro.

          Thanks for the reply:)

        • @ets27: i'd still go for the em10 but that's me

        • @eltito:
          Yes I'll get that with 14 42 at Ted's ebay. 818 minis 15%.

          Thanks:)

        • @eltito:
Oh and btw i managed to get the 45mm portrait for 185 at myer :)

    • I'm assuming you mean the em10? If so the 4/3 sensor would be the main thing that puts me off here. But I guess it depends what features are important to you. Although I don't really see anything outstanding that the Olympus has over the Sony?

      • +1

different strokes for different folks, personally for me it was neck and neck but when i held the cameras i instantly loved the feel of the olympus, and i couldn't go wrong with a cheaper and bigger range in lenses.

the sony has a better sensor but after playing with both cameras and taking pictures - i didn't see much difference, and then when i googled it, i got the feel that it would only be a useful feature for me if i ever decided to enlarge my pictures - which i never plan on doing while i'm learning. But like i said different strokes for differnet folks :)

        • That's it eltito, it really comes down to what you plan to use it for. The bigger sensor was important to me mainly because I was looking for really good low light performance with the ability to push the iso quite high. I think the most important thing for anyone buying these sort of cameras is just learning how to use them properly and understanding how to use the various settings, along with what they do.

      • yes sorry, I was meaning the em10, the om10 is my super old 35mm film :)
I like the oly simply because I can swap enses with my camera drone. But if the Sony is way better, then I will go for it.

        • ets27, way better depends on what features you need, I think the A6000 is great, but I am biased and don't know enough about the other models you are looking at. A good place I found for comparing reviews of cameras is Photography Blog. They follow the same methodology for each of their reviews, so it's easy to compare, also provide good summaries and sample images. Also helpful for quickly comparing specs is camera decision.
If you want any feedback on my experience with the A6000 or have a specific question just let me know.

        • @PeteM:

Thanks Pete, I guess I will stick to MFT as I will need to swap some lenses with DJI Zenmuse and lenses are also generally cheaper

Don't forget about the $100 cashback from Sony.

    • does Ryda-Online count as a participating Sony Authorised Dealer?

      • Not 100%, I sent them an eBay msg to check.

      • If cash back is not included for Ryda and you have a local Paxtons near you, you can get it for $718 after cashback.
Not sure if Ryda or Paxtons is better for after sales service.

      • Ryda is included, I called sony.

        • Good to know, because I never got a reply to my eBay message.

        • @PeteM:

          Got my gift card yesterday

This camera was released 3 years ago. The fact that it's still alive and kicking and at this price-point in one of the most competitive camera markets really says something.

  • Good deal but just save up and get the 6100 or 6300

    • 6100?

      I think you mean 6300 or 6500?

    • Only if you are interested in shooting 4k or fast moving object.

  • Strange no one is posting Canon EOS M6 deal. I would prefer M6 to A6000 because of the touch screen and cheaper lens option.

    • +1

If you thought there weren't many E-mount lenses available, wait till you look at the EF-M situation. :)

      • Yes, there are many E-mount lens I just can not afford. I have both A6300 and EOS M3. Canon EF-M lenses are cheaper than Sony counterpart. Although the option of EF-M lens is limited but the quality is really good, plus native adapter to EF/EF-S lens is easier than expensive Metabone adaptor or Sigma MC-11.

        • I find the M3's rather sluggish performance frustrating. I sure hope the M6 has improved.

The good thing with Sony is you can buy lots of non-Sony lenses for them. With Canon you're a lot more limited. I think if Canon didn't do such a poor job with the original EOS M, it might have been more popular.

        • @eug: Yes, that's true, M3 is not good enough. but M5 and M6 have the same excellent focusing system as the 80D, plus they have in body image stabilisation and touch screen. So, if you only shot 1080/60fps for video and/or already have some EF/EF-S lenses, M6 is probably a better choice than A6000 or even A6300.

        • +1

@maxdba: It isn't the focusing system, it's the poor shot-to-shot speed. I recorded this for someone else a while back.

SD card speed isn't the issue - successive shots should be written to the buffer.

So, if you only shot 1080/60fps for video and/or already have some EF/EF-S lenses, M6 is probably a better choice than A6000 or even A6300.

The M6 is pretty expensive, and the M5 is even more expensive. For around the price of the M5 you can an A6300 that can do 4K. 1080p is a bit low nowadays for a $1k+ camera I think. There's a brand new A6300 body on ebay now for $880 after the 20% coupon.

IMHO both the M5/6 are comparatively poor choices for video. Not only are they stuck at 1080p, they only do 35Mbps max. The A6000 supports 60Mbps XAVC-S. The A6300 can do 100Mbps at 4K, and supports S-Log2 and S-Log3.

I think Canon lost the plot after starting the DSLR video revolution with the 5D Mk2. Sony and Panasonic happily took over, while Nikon is still asleep. :)

        • @eug: My M3 is not that slow shown in the video though. EOS M6 body in the ebay after 20% sale is actually only $660, that is a very attractive price. For average consumers, 1080p is sufficient, they do not know much about the difference between 35Mbps or 100Mbps. Canon however do not care much about enthusiast who is begging for 4K all day. In fact, enthusiast is just a minority. You may not like Canon's market strategy but they are still No.1.

        • @maxdba:

You may not like Canon's market strategy but they are still No.1.

In the DSLR market, probably. But definitely not in the mirrorless market, which has greater appeal to the average consumer. How many people do you know own an EOS M series vs Sony, Panasonic, Olympus, etc?

They were No. 1 in the DSLR video market in 2009. Now… nope. Lots of videographers and enthusiasts have switched from Canon to Sony or Panasonic. That's a market who would happily spend more on a camera than the average consumer too, as long as it was worth it.

Photography-wise, on the more serious end of the range, Canon DSLRs are still excellent. When it comes to taking photos at non-social events, I much prefer my aging 5D2 over the A6500 as it's quicker to operate and feels more responsive. Maybe the A7/A9 are similar, but I haven't tried them yet.

        • @eug:

I can't find an A6300 at that price on eBay. Can you post a link? Thanks!

        • @powervideo: Too late, you missed it!

        • @eug: Dang!!!!!!!!!

        • @powervideo:

          That looked like gray import

        • @eug: Pick up my old M3 today, even with a slow SD card, I do not see such big lag between shots. Maybe it is a firmware issue?

        • @maxdba: It's on the latest firmware. Is yours set to single-shot mode or burst mode? That test was done in single-shot mode.
