Returning Unused Electronics at Harvey Norman

I bought a D-Link EXO AC1900 Wi-Fi Router from Harvey Norman when I was in store checking out their sale last weekend. I thought it was a pretty good deal for $173 but it was a bit of an impulse buy and when I got back home and did some research I saw there were a lot of people complaining about frequent disconnections, dropouts etc. Also, I totally forgot to check if I could plug a hard drive via USB to the router (I can't).

Considering all that, I would like to return the router back for a full refund. I have not opened the package yet and I still have the receipt. Can I do so with no questions asked?

EDIT: I did contact them to know if I could be issued a refund. But I was told to bring it to the store and it is up to the store rep to accept and refund. So I wanted to know if others have any experience doing the same.

  • Sure can.

  • I don't know about any laws but their site states:

    Change of Mind

Please choose carefully as refunds are not normally provided where you have simply changed your mind, made a wrong selection or simply found the goods cheaper elsewhere. We recommend you carefully preview any orders before adding them to your shopping cart and proceeding with your order.

Anecdotally though I had a friend sent back a printer after a week (unopened) and they were given store credit, so you can always ask.

Interestingly if the router did stop working, drops out or frequently disconnected you probably actually could get a refund? lol

So I guess technically you either get a working router, or hopefully a refund? (I know thats the last they would want to give you though).

    Thought of asking them?

Best to check with strangers not involved in the business first

Ever thought of searching first then?

    • Ye I did.. Not a helpful conversation. I was told to bring it to the store and it is up to the store rep to accept and refund. So I wanted to know if others have any experience doing the same

      • That salesman shouldn't have told you that the mere act of purchasing the router would give you an extra 3 inches. You definitely want your full refund.

  • They will ask you why you want to refund it, you will say change of mind, they will say no, as is their right.

And if you try to bullshit and say it is broken or something, well it's still unopened.

Just put it up on eBay or something and call it a bad decision. Tonnes of idiots pay top dollar for computer stuff on eBay all the time. Trust me, I've sold stuff and am genuinely surprised what people will pay for second hand computer gear.

Yeah, I remember seeing a used PS Vita WiFi go for more than the exact same model brand new from EBgames.

    • So true about the electronic stuff. I recently sold my Apple TV 3rd gen for $150+postage used when they go on Apple refurb for $89.

      • Sold and iphone 3g 16gb model for $350 when the 4s was released. Battery was bad but gee wiz didnt expect to get that much.

Sold a few other things for a premium too which is a suprise…. some things sell and somw take time.

not sure about full refund d bit you could definitely swap it for a model you want . or store credit

  • You are not automatically entitled to anything just because you change your mind. Shops each make their own policy on this. So do what they have asked you to do. I would think they are pretty likely to let you at least exchange it.

Tell them you assumed all these new tangled routers allow external storage and you didn't realise it didn't until a knowledgeable friend explained it wasn't the case and gave you a router with that feature. If it is still in shrinkwrap you should have no issues returning it within a week of purchase. Even easier if you just want to swap for another router they sell for the same reason.

    • ^^ Best advice ^^

  • as a random internet user then I say that "yes, you are able to get a full refund"

    • As a random internet user can i get some legal advice.?

  • So I wanted to know if others have any experience doing the same.

Pointless. Every store and store rep is different. Some nicer than others, but they're are certainly not legally obligated to give you a refund or exchange.

If you ask nicely (play dumb), you have a small chance. If you just rely on strangers who may have had bad luck, then you have 0% chance.

  • In my experience on both sides, they will almost always exchange an unopened product for store credit or another item.

Refunds are more difficult because they represent a direct loss for targets and commission. Generally a nice demeanour and explanation of your issue will be your best bet. Although, admittedly, lying and saying a salesperson from a different store claimed it had one or more of those features would be more effective- if that had actually happened they would be legally required to refund it. Kind of a dick move, but eh.

It all depends on the salesman that you approach.

My local hardly normal has some real nice blokes that will help you no matter what which is great and they are all the mature sales staff, the younger guys just dont give a (profanity) and i avoid them at all cost.

Legally you are not entitled to a refund or exchange.
You will most likely be dealing with the salesperson that you bought it from. This person got commission on the sale and wont want to lose it, but as it is a small item they may give you a store credit. HN, when I worked for them 20 years ago, used to be a very customer oriented business, but from what I read about them that may no longer be the case.

If you want another router with hdd input then they are likely to credit this one against the other, but expect to pay ticket price.

If you get treated shabbily go to the service counter and ask to speak to the owner or leave and ring and ask for the manager/owner/franchisee. This person will have a outlook that may help you out. If no luck ring head office and see if they can help. If the store was rude to you and you were polite throughout head office are likely to side with you. If you are an ar$e then you may be out of luck.

As said by others, take it back and see what happens before worrying about it.
