Kia Sportage SLI Diesel - Buy or Wait?

Hi guys, first time poster here.

I have been considering getting a car for a while, did my research etc and decided on Kia Sportage SLI Diesel MY17. I don't really care if it is '16 or '17 year build, as long as it is a MY17 model as I believe it is where they have got the latest engine with 6.4L/100km compared to 6.8L/100km in previous model. Couple of questions:

1) Have been running around myself as well as looking at what people share on forums in regards to the price, and for that particular model with the metallic paint thrown in the best I could find was around $36000. Would it be a good price or given EOFY deals I could do better?

2) Given that we have just welcomed a newborn in our life, we are not travelling much ATM, so the car would be really required around August - September. Does it make sense to wait until then or should I still buy now because of EOFY? Also, because I don't really mind getting a car built in 2016 as long as it is new (provided someone is still having them), the price on those cars would have to drop further.

Appreciate your advice, have never bought a new car before.

does it need to be a kia?

    • I own Hyundai i30 diesel and my initial thought was to get new Tucson. After doing my research (which might be a bit outdated as I did it 8 weeks ago) Kia came up as the best in terms of value/money. I am very open to other suggestions though for cars of similar size with diesel engines.

Not sure about current offers,so you will have to decide…. but I have the same vehicle SLI Diesel, and I just love it. A year old now but the only issue had been the Apple car play, now available!. Only other issue, the tyre pressure sensors can be tempremental … BUT, had a warning when the vehicle was around a month old and sort of ignored it for a few days Must be a glitch??!, not so!, I had a slow leak and it picked it up and was fixed.

The build quality is great, and not so long ago it was the best vehicle for inital quality in the American - JD Powers survey, that is a global tester in I think all vehicle markets. Why do you think they can offer a 7 year warranty, Kia has good confidence in their vehicles, or they would go broke with the claims. Buy & enjoy, I am not associated with any sales, but I did work for 30+ years in the local vehicle auto industry - design/engineering, before retiring.

    • Thank you for your reply, appreciate you sharing your experience. 7 years warranty is definately a game changer. Even if nothing goes wrong, the car's value should depreciate slower because of that. And I believe there are quite cheap options to extend this warranty up to 10 years which might be worth considering if planning to sell the car after 7-8 years.

that is a common misunderstanding. vehicles that we've found to hold it's value the best isn't the ones that have the longest manufacturer warranties. we only buy japanese made vehicles made by a certain company. their reliability has been proven and their resell value very good compared to other brands.

    buy Toyota

    • Could you please elaborate on that? When I did the comparison, Toyota came 5th after Kia, Hyundai, Mitsubishi and Mazda on a combination of features and cost parameters. I have never had a test drive on it though, as I decided to focus on the first 3 on my list only due to time constraints.

      • Welcome to OzBargain, where the answer to the question nobody asked is always "Toyota".

  • Paraphrasing the second question, is it generally better to postpone the purchase as far as possible (cannot do more than 3 months though) to get better value for money (whether a newer car or get it cheaper) or should I be buying now before the end of the month?
    Thanks in advance!

I would suggest that you not extend the warranty beyond the 7 years, I can't imagine that with the extra cost, that would outweigh the percieved better sale price.

Extended warranty's are a good profit centre for dealerships, as I understand.

Also in many instances the offered extended warranty is NOT a factory warranty, but some sort of arrangement with an insurance company. They are to my knowledge only a partial cover situation ..engine, gearbox, but with limitations, avoid.

  • A couple of days left till EOFY, and I still have not decided whether to buy now or postpone for 2 months. I thought of using https://www.motorbuys.com.au/, maybe even ask for an interstate quote (there are a few companies which would deliver a car for $300-$500, which might be worth it). Anyone used that service before? Also, what happenes if the car delivered has issues and has to be exchanged, do I pay the return delivery fee or should it be a part of the deal with the dealer, i.e. in case of the issues, they would organise the car pickup themselves? Would be hard to get the dealer to agree to these terms though I imagine.

Just buy the car when you are ready. Find out what you can get one for now, and then don't buy unless you can get the same price later.

Unless you want a specific hard to find model, I'd say that buying interstate is just going to cost the same as your local best price, and possibly a bit more.
