20K Points for Joining Amex Life Insurance Approx $6 Per Month. 6 Month Minimum

1740

Just noticed this deal and thought I might do a post here to share. Credit to 'NoName' from the AFF forums.

Guess most Ozbargainers would have some sort of AMEX card. As title suggests 20,000 Bonus points for new life insurance policies. Points to be credited up to 8 weeks after the first premium is paid. AMEX reserve the right to reverse bonus points if you cancel within 6 months.

The points you get will depend on the card you choose to use.
If you use the Qantas cards, you will get 20,000 Qantas.
If you use the Explorer, you will get 20,000 Gateway which transfers out to 15,000 Airline Points for a range of partners.
If you use the Platinum Charge, you will get 20,000 Ascent.

As a data point, with min cover of $50,000, Mylife policy comes out to about $6 a month.

Over 6 months, the total cost is $36.

To apply, login to your AMEX account and click on the 'Insurance' tab and follow the prompts.

If you do not get either the email or the flyer in the mail, don't despair… the deal is not targeted.

It is available to new customers but if you are not comfortable feel free to confirm with it please call 1800 025 015 and ask about the promotion.

  • Thanks for sharing OP! Mine came up to $4.16/month for the $50,000 cover. Now just gonna wait on the 20,000 bonus points!

  • Amex Essential eligible?

  • took a risk and signed up
    $5.91 for me
someone said free for first month but mine made no mention of it

hopefully I will get my points after the first month and then I will cancel

    • +1

you can't cancel too early because they may pull back the points if insurance cancelled in first 6 months. Was in the T&Cs

  • Depends on a persons age, this is only a deal for young people.
The older you are, the higher the premiums, so its a bit useless quoting a premium without revealing your age/sex/smokerstatus

  • Hello Everyone,

Can someone please help me if I still can get the rewards?
    I linked to www.americanexpress.com/au/content/insurance/term-life-insur…
However, I forgot to log in my account and directly referred to apply the life insurance by my primary Amex card. I think I made big mistake.

    • I logged in to my account, but as soon as I clicked apply it said something like "Moving you away from americanexpress.com.au or whatever. So I don't think (I hope) it matters. None of my details were transferred to my life insurance application. I think they must just look at the card (again, I hope) that paid for it and award points accordingly.

  • So if I purchase life insurance for my self and my partner I can get 40k points?

  • To reduce the premium, can you sign up a family member (eg. 18 years old) that does not exist? With no intention to claim, just want the points.

  • called amex few minutes ago and was advised that the policy holder and card holder must be the same person. my husband can't use my card to purchase the policy. it is not eligible for the promotion.

  • and amex gold card is not eligible even it starts with 3760

  • After doing the application there was a message saying that no premium was payable for the first month of cover.

  • I don't get it - well, I kinda do, but not that it's life insurance. So everyone's signing up for 6 months of life insurance, just to get 20k of points? But unless you DIE!, you're getting nothing from the $60 core product (the life insurance) you've spent the money on? So in other words, are you all lining up to pay $60 bucks just for 20,000 ff points? Can't you get ff points anyway just with free credit cards?

    • +2

20,000 ff points can be sold for $200 on the classifieds. Yes, you can but you don't get a credit check on your credit history using this method.

      • Oh, cheers mate, got it! But when you say FF points, does that mean Virgin Velocity in any way, or will they just be AMEX ff points? I'm in the Velocity one, but I'm not in any other programs.

        • +1

When I called, the lady made it sound like we would get 20k Velocity points since that's the program we're enrolled in.

        • @nurries:

i thought other posts above mention the 'ascent' which for my amex app is my general amex rewards points in my card (not my virgin frequent flier)? I dont think i even have my velocity FF linked?

    • 20000 award points is $140 off the credit card bill anyway, so you make money. Why wouldn't you sign up?

  • My husband went through his account to buy insurance but then used my amex card to pay! Will he still get the points do you think? Or maybe I will?!

    • Interesting one. Please let us know the result. If neither one gets the points after 2 monthly payments then I would cancel. That is my plan for the family's Life Insurance that I have taken out on my 3 Amex accounts. But for me $30 is worth the gamble for 60,000 AMEX points. And there will be 2-3 months life insurance too, which is nothing to be sneezed at.

  • +1

Checked with 1800 237 300, couple things confirmed: 1. has to be an AMEX issued card starting with 3760, 2. the offer is running per card which means you can get 2x bonus points if you buy 2 policies on 2 cards, 3. there is currently no end date of this offer, 4. you don't have to stay 6 months, as long as the points arrived (6-8 weeks after first payment - 2nd policy month) you are free to cancel

    • So not eligible on platinum edge card for this?

      • he told me had to be an amex issued card not bank issued card, and he gave me an example of 3760. Since my essential starting with 3760, I didn't ask for other type

        • yes, my platinum edge is 3760 starting with. it'll be fine - otherwise check your card number Arab and you'll know regardless of the card type .

        • @SaberX: My platinum edge starts with 3778, oh well I signed up looks like ill wait and see if it is credited.

        • +2

          @ArabMoneeey:

My Explorer starts with 3778 and received the points absolutely fine.

        • @robbegong: cool thanks for the confirmation! Did you pay the annual fee upfront to receive the points?

        • @ArabMoneeey:

No, I signed up to pay monthly but I did so back in May - the promo has been going for longer than it was posted here as a deal. The first month is free, so I was charged the first premium on 5 June, points landed straight away when that happened. Now I'm just paying monthly and will cancel at some point.

      • i used a platinum edge and have received the points

        • Same, got mine on plat edge!

    • +1

I will be following the T & C's. If I get the points then I will not be cancelling within 6 months of commencement date. It is not money lost, as you are getting something for it. IE life insurance.

    • 3760? My Essential is 3778!

    • but Amex has the right to cancel the bonus points if you cancel before 6 months.

  • +1

so i followed it up and got this response but reading through the new comments i didnt use the 3760 card :(

Interesting that they say "policies that are taken out this month". The general consensus here is that it is valid until the 31st of July (which I thought was strange given this is likely to get new customers before EOFY).

      • +1

Looking at the comments, the policy has to be taken out by 30 June 2017

        See this:
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/4804463/redir

The references to July are related to when people expect points to be credited.

        • I was referring to the deal expiry (which should be changed!) and a comment before the T&C were posted I believe, but thanks for the clarity, need to get on this ASAP! I'm just waiting for my Velocity card to come!

    • I followed your link and got this:

      "American Express Ezicover MyLife Quote"

where as if you follow the insurance link through the AmEx website you get this:

"American Express Ezicover Life Insurance Quote"

Is one eligible and the other not? They're not very clear about this.

      • Both are eligible but the Ezicover Life has a minimum cover of $50k instead of $200k, which means a lower premium.

        • Good to know. Thanks!

        • So should we therefore be following the "ezicover life" through amex website rather than the my life link posted, if we want to get the cheapest ($60) cover for 6 months to get the free points?

  • Guys, I signed up on Friday and I've been checking my Amex account and I haven't been charged, anyone know why? I've received a email from Zurich advising I've applied and accepted.

  • thanks OP.
    Submitted my application today.

Can anyone confirm if there was a Pre-Auth on the card ?

also, I haven't seen where it was mentioned as First month free.

  • +1

Signed up Number 1 daughter -with permission- on a lower premium <$5 (mine was $15+pm!) with payments from my Amex (not her supplementary Amex!). Hopefully will work!?

  • It states for platinum edge it is 20,000 ascent points - this is virgin velocity right?

Is there no way to just get the membership reward points that are just iny our normal amex card - so I can redeem it for gift cards/direct amex offers (e.g. sometimes they offer shop small +25% redemption on using your point sto pay off charges).

Everyone keeps talking about how this is worth krisflyer points, air asia points etc. I keep seeing these news articles of how to game the system by flying on the cheap by using and obtaining points wherever possible, promotions like this etc. I really have no clue as to how much a 1 point of a frequent flyer is worth and what that coudl get you. Can anyone recommend a comprehensive website that perhaps explains how to do all this? Perhaps gives breakdown of what each different major airlines around the world's point system is worth, how much to get a free flight etc??

I have bene reluctant to get frequent flyer point linked cards as I have only ever known using rewards points for the credit card direct, but it seems like alot of peole are getting great flight deals by using points. Getting married and honeymoon would require flights to europe , and i do fly virgin - with the now $200 credit voucher i could use supplementary $$ in order to catch flights over to melbourne etc. Would appreciate if someone who knows the points system well can point me in the right direction? THanks!

You should find illumination posts, he is an expert in credit cards and a very helpful Ozbargain member.

Amex has 3 different Membership Rewards (MR): Gateway, Ascent and Ascent Premium. From there you can transfer membership reward points to different airlines and hotels at different ratio
Gateway 4:3 (for example 1 MR point = 0.75 frequent flyer point**)
Ascent 1:1 (for example 1 MR = 1 frequent flyer point)
Ascent Premium is same as Ascent but you can transfer your MR point to Qantas

      **frequent flyer point:
      Asia Miles
      Emirates Skywards
      Etihad Guest
      Malaysian Airlines Enrich
      Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer
      THAI Royal Orchid Plus
      Velocity Frequent Flyer

Basically, in regard to this deal, if you can get 20,000 MR Ascent, that means you can convert them to 20,000 Velocity or Asia Miles…Does it make sense? Please ask or PM me if you have any other questions.

      • Thanks! where should I find T-man's posts?

So the frequent flyer points that I can change to with the ascent program can be any of those airlines: asia miles, emirates all th eway down to velocity FF that you mentioned?

I guess my question is given all the programs how you game the system in terms of which is best to use and book flights or use points etc? I assume some are more advantageous? For now I assume one can just keep their points in ascent points pending knowing which one to transfer to? Although I do notice at times vigin give 25% bonus points on transfer etc, so i assume these deals are alot more advantageous?

I guess the next question is how to get the life insurance to show the offer- i logged into my amex online but couldn't see any offer or wording about the 20,000 points.

ok so rang zurich to cancel and they said they need a signed letter emailed to [email protected] to cancel it

so obviously i asked like "are you saying a word document with just the words "please cancel this policy number 800#####" was enough if it had my signature and he said yes

sounds really weird way to cancel and wondering if anyone else got the same response or was he fibbing?

    • did u get the points already?

      • no i used a non 3760 card so im trying to cancel it and apply with another amex

        • did u get information saying only 3760 cards? There's been a lot of different information written :(

        • @cloudy: no amex said to talk to zurich then zurich said to talk to amex so i complained on amex fb site and sent them an email but reading all the comments it seems 3760 is supported and no bank amexes allowed

        • @jabroni:

i'm abit confused - i have a 3760 card, but when you login to amex and select insurance, there isn't any writing or prompts on the 20,000 free pionts? Zilch? Do you then proceed to the link ont he page to zurich for a quote and just assume this deal is valid - i know alot of people have said it is, but always great to see some ounce of promotional material to confirm, which seems to be absent to date.

        • @SaberX:

Yea, I have signed up on blind faith ozbargain is correct, willing to fork out 2 premiums to find out which is about $10.

I'll let you know, though it won't help since u need to sign up by 30th, so u gotta risk it yourself,

But if after the 2nd payment I don't get points, Ill report back,so hopefully anyone else can cancel and save a months premium.

        • @jabroni:

I'm assuming the 3760 is the Platinum Charge card which is eligible.

        • @cloudy: i got an email reply

          Hi

Thanks for your two emails. The bonus points won’t be applicable to a bank issued American Express, however if you check the T&Cs for the promotion, you should see if you qualify using your American Express issued card with the eligible rewards program.

Offer only available to new American Express Ezicover Insurance Policy Holders who are Australian residents aged between 19 and 69, who apply by 31 July 2017, are approved and have purchased their policy using an eligible American Express Card that is enrolled in an eligible rewards program. American Express reserves the right to reverse your points should you cancel your policy within 6 months of the commencement date. Eligible rewards programs include Membership Rewards program, Qantas Frequent Flyer program and Velocity Frequent Flyer program. The following are not Eligible Cards: Bank Issued American Express Cards, David Jones American Express Cards, Business Cards that are affiliated with a wholesale partner, American Express Business Travel Accounts, Government Cards, Corporate Purchasing Cards, Corporate Meeting Cards and Corporate Cards. Bonus Points will be allocated once per Card account, therefore Card Members who currently hold or have previously purchased an American Express Ezicover Insurance product are ineligible for this offer. Please allow 8 -10 weeks from payment of your first monthly or annual premium for the 20,000 bonus points to be credited to your rewards program.

    • Yeap that's how I cancelled my policy as well.

  • Did it for me and mrs tizey - hopefully 40k points coming soon on Plat Charges. Might try it yet on mrs tizey Explorer… undecided yet.

Opted to speed it up - pay the annual premium in full after reports of points being allocated once first payments made.. didnt want to wait a month given card has to be cancelled by end of July. About $40-50 each. Worth it for the extra points hands down.

    Thanks OP.

  • I said I did scuba diving and now it has been excluded from the cover I've taken out. Not a huge problem for me because I only dive overseas and have travel insurance for it but still.. didn't result in a lower premium so that's annoying. Was $4.xx.

  • Finally got my Velocity Platinum card last night and signed up this morning. Just in time!

  • has anyone been charged yet for the first month? i applied on the 22nd of June and haven't been charged yet

    • +1

I applied Wednesday night, but opted for annual payment instead of monthly (my annual fee hits end of July - I want the points and cancel the card prior to annual fee being charged).

I've had the annual payment taken overnight last night, but the charge is still sitting as pending. Hoping that once it clears in the next few days, the 20k bonus points hit.

Annual premium cost $40 odd dollars compared to $4-5/month.. still a good return for 20k points if it comes off.

    • +1

      1st month is free

      • That explains why I haven't been charged yet even though I applied on 21st. So points will only show after first charge?

        • Yes as per T&C

can anyone confirm that they got the 20k if apply with a supplementary amex issued card?

    • The t&c's say once per card account, and as it is on the same card account as the primary card, I am guessing that you won't get the points on primary AND Supp. card, but if anyone has, then that would be good to know.

  • +1

Thanks OP - points credited this morning after pending transaction cleared. DId it for both me & mrs tizey. Selected to pay an annual premium to speed it up rather than monthly.

    For the record:
    - Signed up 28/6
    - Annual payment taken from cards 29/6
    - Transaction settled from Pending today
    - 20K points hit main cardholder accounts today.

Circa $100 for 40k Ascent Premium points (Plat Charge) = definitely worthwhile!

    • Thanks Tizey. Nice to know it worked for you. I signed up for the Platinum Charge because of your post. :). Alas $1,200 poorer, this softens the blow a bit.

      • Sign up for both Priority Pass card and get all your hotel elite status done as well. It'll definitely soften the blow a lot more.

    • +1

Dang I should have did that. I wonder if it's possible to change to annual payment now.

      • Signed up for the Priority Pass but haven't traveled much this year so haven't got much use out of it. Was going to try use the complementary car rental insurance with some nice cars that I would never be able to afford. :)

Probably only suggest the annual payment option if you need the points asap to close the account. Otherwise should credit in the next month or so.

        • I need the points credited to avoid paying the annual fee.

      • As do I.

    • i assume the only downside is you save 6 months if you go for 6 months then cancel? Whereas with the annual payment you get a year's coverage, points instantly, and you still needt o hold for 6 months (well why wouldn't you given you've paid a full year) - so best suits those who don't mind having the insurance altogether for the year and longer?

      • Usually you'll get pro-rata refund if you cancel mid way through, I would have guess.

    • Hi Tizey, wondering if you can help with a few questions, since there is a bit of confusion.

what Amex card do you use?
Does ur amex start with 3760?
Which insurance did u buy? EziCover MyLife insurance or the other one?

      thanks

      • No probs.

Amex plat charge - both cards were primary cards starting with 3760. I bought mine with my card, Mrs tizey bought hers with her card.

American Express Ezicover Life Insurance is what I bought. Circa $5/month for $50k of cover… Not sure which one that is from your description.

Hasn't the ship sailed.. it was a 30 June cut-off??

        • Yea, I bought it already, but my card doesn't start with 3760. Some people has said its required, others hasn't mentioned it. So I guess I'm taking the risk, since my card doesn't start with 3760, but is a platinum edge (which some people has said is fine).

So I'm risking paying the 1 month fee, to see if I get points basically :)

        • @cloudy:

Ah cool. Good luck. Hopefully it comes off and you get the points :)

        • +1

          @cloudy:

Don't worry about the 3760 thing - it's not mentioned in the official terms and conditions, and I can personally confirm I received the points no problems at all on my card starting with 3778 (Explorer).

        • @robbegong:

          Thanks Robbe!

        • High rollers. You should try purchasing on the Centurion card to see if you get additional points.

  • Did this expire on 30/6 or has anyone been successful with verification from amex that this deal still is valid after Jul 1? cheers

  • Can you apply for a family member on your primary card or is it just yourself?

  • +1

1 done = 20,000 amex MR posted today :) very happy. I paid annualy $57.52

Waiting for another 3 amex bonus points ( signed up my whole family ). The other 3 are monthly charges. If all goes well, the cheapest 80,000 MR points :)

    • You do know you need 4 primary cards in order to achieve that right?

      • Yes correct. Me and wife each have amex explorer and edge.

        • Great! You're all set! I'm on my third one atm. Definitely not a bad points earner by all means.
