OnePlus 5 Is out. Your Thoughts?

What are your thoughts on the newly released OnePlus 5? It looks it has good specs. Should I buy it or choose OnePlus 3T?

Comments

  • do you like the 5 or the 3T better?

  • never buy newly released product because you will pay premium (r&d and marketing).
the wise people will buy oneplus 4 now, when oneplus 5 is released.

      There isn't a Oneplus 4. It went from 3T to 5.

      • apologies but you know what i meant anyway

      OnePlus 3 = 5

        Wouldn't oneplus 3 =4?

        • synergy?

The 3T will be $250+ cheaper than the 5 when it launches. The 5 has a lot of improvements over the 3T, but some reviews have noted that the 5 has some issues at present with the camera (likely fixable with software updates in future).

    B28, YES!!!!!!
maybe in 10 months time yes.

Finally, Band28 (700MHz LTE) makes it feasible for the Australian market.

However before you rush to buy it:
      - 6GB/64GB: US$479 = AU$633 => AU$770 retail (grey sellers, shipping, gst).
      - 8GB/128GB: US$539 = AUS$713 => AU$850 retail (grey seller, shipping, gst).
      - No water or dust ingress protection
      - No stereo speakers
      - USB-C is only 2.0… not 3.0/3.1/TB3
      - No microSD slot (not a big deal with the 64GB and 128GB options)
      - No OIS
      - Not great battery life, good, not great (slightly better than S7/S8, on-par with OnePlus 3T, worse than S8+)
      - meh camera (slightly better/on-par with OnePlus 3T, slightly worse than Galaxy S7, notably worse than iPhone 7 and Pixel)
      - meh screen (slightly better/on-par with Samsung Note 3, much worse than Note 4/S6/S7/S8)
      - meh software (they promise swift updates and long-term support… but so does Samsung, except Samsung has the money to fulfil those promises, I've lost faith in OPO in this regard ever after their OnePlus One and OnePlus 3 they're not the same)

Considering you can find the S7, S7 Edge, and the LG G6 on sales means the OnePlus 5 isn't as much of a good value as the brand has been known to be.
I think AU$770 is too expensive for this phone, if it was $500-$600 then sure, but its a hard sell right now.
Though I recommend people wait a little more to find out more kinks and problems, get informed, before taking the plunge.

No water resistance, OIS, SD card slot… meh

No radar, no blending, no horse racing prediction - meh

"No radar, no blending, no horse racing prediction"…..and here, no sense of humour, by the looks, gave you a + to negate at least one neg

  • what's the current alternatives at this spec\price point?

    • xiaomi mi 6 for 600

      • Getting cheaper by the day too.

        • yeah i reckon once mi 6 is under 500 its an absolute steal. Apparently the camera on mi 6 is better than oneplus 5 as well!

  • +1

No one should pay the launch price $700+ AUD.

Couple months later this is going to be an interesting device hovering around $500 - $600. The semi flagship battle is going to be interesting:

    • $400 LG V20 - 2016 flagship SOC, tier 1.5 screen & tier 2 camera
    • $450 Oneplus 3T - 2016 flagship SOC, tier 1.5 screen & tier 2 camera
    • $500 LG G6 - 2016 flagship SOC, tier 1 screen & tier 1.5 camera
    • $550 S7 Edge - 2016 flagship SOC, tier 1 screen & tier 1 camera
    • $600 Oneplus 5 - 2017 flagship SOC, tier 1.5 screen & tier 1.5 camera
    • $700/$800 S8/S8+ - 2017 flagship SOC, tier 1 screen, tier 1 camera, best design. Only downsides are micro-stuttering UI and bad fingerprint sensor placement

Unfortunately all of the above has some significant issues in core areas. As much as I don't like Samsung in the last 5 years I gotta say the two S8 variants are hitting almost all the sweet spots. Yes they are pricey but you get close to 'no compromise'.

If you are willing to spend $1k then grab either Pixel XL2, iphone 8 or Essential Phone (assuming EP lives up to its hype).

    • Also don't forget the htc U11, it's capable of competing with the S8 in almost all areas.

      • +1

It's currently sitting at $900 which hurts it a lot where you can get the S8 for $700.

Another big let down is the omission of headphone jack. It doesn't matter which way you spin it; the true motivation is money grabbing.

        • Where can you get the S8 for $700?

        • +1

@clse945111: Not exactly $700 but was really close in the 15% ebay sale.

        • @MadMaxBargainRoad:
          As far as I can tell the S8 is $885 (~$752 if there's 15% off), the U11 is ~$896 (~$761 if there's 15% off)…, both grey imports.
Not to mention the U11 at this price is with 6GB+128GB while the S8 is only 4GB+64GB. Really not sure where you got that $900 from.

        • @clse945111: Never noticed the $896 eBay price until you mentioned it. Guess I am still referring to the deal posted in mid May.

If U11 can be had at the same price as S8 it would definitely be an alternative. Especially if you'd trade prefer better performance for headphone jack.

    • What's wrong with the LG G6? I reckon if it doesn't show QA issues it's a winner.

      • Screen quality and image quality are half a step back comparing to the other flagships.

  • Exchange rate not kind to us at moment when paying USD. So I'll stick with my OnePlusOne for bit longer

  • Mi6 is cheaper, and judging from what people is saying, has a better camera and screen. That's all I need to know.

    • Better cam than g6?

      • Nah, the wide angle lens on the g6 is too useful.

  • Uninspired design notwithstanding, the OnePlus 5 delivers great performance in an affordable Android phone.
