Thinking of Buying 2005 Evo 9

So im new to the Evo scene and ive recently come across one with 130xxx which isnt too bad
however does have quite a few mods such as

  • Autronic computer
  • Launch controller
  • Tomei 20G turbo
  • Tomei dump pipe
  • AMS inter cooler
  • Custom exhaust Japan spec
  • Cosworth 272 cams
  • 700cc injectors
  • Works wheels 19inch
  • Defi gauge
  • Alpine head unit
  • Tien adjustable suspension

What im asking is what should i be looking out for Eg. Common problems or anything else with those mods that could potentially hurt my pocket in the future. Thanks in advance

Fuel economy will hurt your pocket if it's a daily. That thing looks like a beast.

  • The tyres wear out much quicker than I expected, and they're quite expensive.
Service costs aren't that bad, but the performance parts are a bit pricey.

It's okay… but I would sooner recommend you to a 2015 WRX, or STI. There's also the Focus RS, Golf GTi, Golf R and Audi RS3.
If you bought an EVO IX back in 2005, good for you, but it would be about time to upgrade.
The competitors have caught up, and they're more refined and have newer features and technology.

But if your heart's sold on it, not much will change your mind.

    • Big difference in $$s between the 2009 and 2015 lol

In saying that I'd rather a standard EvoX than a modified EvoIX. More driver comfort on the X

      • +1

        standard over modified any day

      • Cheapest Evo IX is going for $27k, and settling around the $45k mark.
Cheapest WRX is going for $32k and settling around $42k mark.
Cheapest WRX STI is going for $40k and settling around the $52k mark.

        …based on prices from carsales.

So yeah, actually not much difference in price between '05 Evo IX ($35k) and a '15 WRX STi ($42k).
I personally prefer Evo's, and the IX imho is the best one, better than the X.
But where the Evo lineage has stagnated, Subaru has kept pace with their WRX series.
And if it was my money, I would probably get the newer STI… it's just more infectious!

        • +1

Wow that's drug money for the 9!

The thing where Mitsubishi excels at though is general driver comfort and creature comfort. Compare the cabin and features of an EvoX to the equivalent Sti and it's chalk and cheese. I've driven both and hugely prefer the interior of the Evo over the Sti.

And let's be honest, you'll be cruising in your car 10x more than you'll be thrashing it.

        • @Spackbace:
I agree, that's why you get the WRX STi.
It's as fast/faster than the Evo… but the creature comforts are much better. I've been in both, you have it the wrong way around. I like the raw feeling you have with the EVO IX… but it gets old, I'm getting old. I prefer the weak feeling with the WRX STi which is better for everyday driving.

Now if you compare the '05 EVO IX to a '05 WRX STi… yeah no comparison at all, get the EVO IX.
The IX is a phenomenal car for its day. But if its the 2015 WRX STI, get that instead.
These are just my opinions anyways, I always suggest hitting some review sites and touch the cars personally before making your mind up.

          @Kangal:

I was referring to the 10, not the 9 ;)

        • @Spackbace:
Oh… I thought you meant the 9 to the new WRX, and I was thinking is this really a Car Guy?
          Lol !!

        • @Kangal:

Lol nah the 10 and dare I say it with the auto box…

        • hahah yeah got a wrx sitting in my driveway still lmao
          best of both worlds huh

    • Did you have an aggressive camber set? they hold the road so i never found it was needed although looked aesthetically pleasing most of the time i'd change it for fun days.

Wrong wheel tyre choice could lead to some rubbing which was another reason to do it but there were other fixes

The problem with cars with mods like that is that they aren't going to be quietly driven on Sundays. They have had the sh*t flogged out of them.

    • Nah man, my 500rwhp Skyline is only ever driven to church on Sunday. By my wife.

      • …Monday to Saturday I drive it. Sideways. Everywhere.

      • @airzone Most people with Modded cars who loose their licence make the same claim

  • You could ask the seller to return the Evo IX to stock form, and then ask to lower the price = cheaper price = bargain = win

    • +1

      notsureifsrs …

  • I agree with above it would have been flogged to hell not something you would get away with grandma drives it to church in the add.

Almost everything listed can cost you dearly. but so nice to play with i'd never tell you not to buy something you have your hard earned cash set on.

these things are once often stages in life things.

If your going to buy it get an expert look at it someone familiar with customisation you need to check how much has been legally documented. / if anything is an unapproved change depending on the state you live in voids your insurance or could prevent you obtaining it.

i have a major love for the Evo's so far as i had ralliart build me a custom to my specs with a local shell and a full unused group N car i picked up and shipped over and it was a monster. When i sold it i made double on what it cost. Ralliart came for free because they loved the project. so mechanical costs were negligible. but when something goes wrong being ingrained in the build gets you off the side of the road quicker.

Separated my clutch into 2 so cleanly they were having trouble figuring out what the actual problem was. It was only replaced by manufacturer when one of Mitsubishi's main mechanics went round and showed them the build.

Having enough power to make the car crab coming out the top of 3rd into 4th as the turbo spooled up again was awesome and was something to behold

Tommi Makinen was the test pilot which was insane in itself and a huge honour, he test test drove it once the ralli art team completed the build and i was asked by Mitsubishi if they could take it back to japan for show it solved a lot of problems Mitsubishi were having trying to achieve.

Got first crack in tommi's car which was an experience too but not off road or gravel tarmac only.

if it's a passion by a stock one and build from everyone else's mistakes you learn so much each time you get a kick in performance it's like a new car

I've done 2 builds the ralliart was seen in flames on freeway after a few years.

The Sti was my other build it was stolen after i sold it ended up on news after totalling 4 cars in a high speed pursuit.

Now i have a toy i can't touch just yet but it's hands down better than both above and performance wise not a lot can touch it either

    Took the new RS3 and it's a weapon 3.6s to 100 verified.
    sub 12 1/4 miles consistently
and it can run off the clock which stops at 300 after i change a setting to disengage the governor set to 250

i raced it with the Audi team and they know it can hit 340 from unmodified versions they have tested.

I can't wait to play with it.

    • +1

      Are your initials S.V?

Mate 340 on a delimited RS3.. pull it a bit harder.

      • i thought they were taking the pi$$ too till they showed me their own video's

the delimiter is just an electronic on off switch in menu system nothing special needed to access it.

but i'm happy to sit you along side the merc engineers that were so confident this years A45 was faster on the 1/4 that were left trying to pull something a bit harder too, after they failed all 3 attempts with basic changes allowed between each run. and they actually knew what they were talking about

        • I guess I'll cancel my Aventador SV order then if an RS3 is going to do 340kmh :D

        • @hummel:

I would, less likely to be keyed and you would have enough money for gas

but also goes against ozbargain spirit giving money away for nothing

I know what my afternoon of fun with merc cost and you could add a good bit more coin to an afternoon of fun with one of those.

and lets be honest anyone with money isn't going to cancel a car limited to 500 units globally

  • how much you getting it for? is it registered?

are you planning on using this as a daily? turning circle on this sucks. best get the ayc checked.

this one would have been pushed hard big time. who setup the ecu?

Anti lag launch control? Don't expect reliability. Haha

    • under 30k
      daily sorta not really
      how do i check AYC
its been tuned but he does not have the paper work so ive no idea how much power its puttin out

      • +1

About 300kw. Ensure you can get is registered. Hardcore mods - you're in trouble. It's a money pit . The ecu stuffs everything up so not much you can't check yourself. Go for a drive but unless you get it cheap and have a spare $10k I would not touch this one

        • Yeah its got rego on it , going to have a look and test drive on saturday, gna see how much boost its on if its too high i probably will stay away from it and most likely buy an 8 MR instead altho i like 9's better theres not many for sale

        • @jonez1213: mr is better anyway due to jap spec tuning vs 9 detunes here

        • Go for a drive but unless you get it cheap and have a spare $10k I would not touch this one

          Bingo.

That mod list and suspected power and there's no dyno printout or receipts?! As if…

There's been no love to this car at all if they don't even have a dyno printout

  • These RS3 lovers need to calm down.

    Get a compression test etc.

Other than being the most uneconomical engine design ever, should be sweet.

PS: I'd rather a tuned stock computer than an Autronic. As the amount of time required to get it civilized is beyond most peoples pockets.

  • Get ready for defects and getting rape for going through the pit.

  • +2

I've got a 2005 IX. Had it for 5 years now. Bought it completely stock, it's now putting out 280kw atw. If I could go back, I'd buy one modified and save the money. It's been my daily driver through city traffic and I still love it.

Haven't had any issues with it after putting 50,000 on the clock. They're a very well built car and can take a beating.

Just get a mechanic to look over everything.

    • Doing the mods yourself is worth the extra money. Knowing you did it all yourself and it isn't going to blow up on you down the road. As the bogan saying goes, built not bought.

      • If there's receipts and it's done by a reputable shop there's nothing to worry about.

        • And of course the experience and fun (when the bloody part fits) you have is also a bonus.

  • -3

Save your cash, get something that's not going to be a money-pit and, as always, buy an appreciating asset instead :)

  • -2

buying a modified car for 30k, you gotta have rocks in your head.

  • 130xxxkms with those mods, iam sure its bullet proof in the mind of the seller.
is a new motor within your budget?
could well be a grenade with those kms and the hp

  • Get engine compression test, look for leaks underneath, look at the interior trims versus KM's, could just say 130k but in fact be very aged from inside, look at the tuning history (who worked on the car, then google to see reputation of tuner ie. Meek auto had a decent EVO rep back in the day, SSS had a good Nissan rep back in the day), what type of owner (talk to him/her and determine their maturity) i.e if they are constantly talking about the performance points it means that is what they like most and used the car for, if the evo has unique plates google it, it may come up in a search, check tyres for wear patterns, check type of tyres to determine owners interest in car (good brand = good, bad or mismatched brand means owner on a budget and would rather save then take care of pride and joy, also check guards for rubber specks, look at exhaust stains on rear bumper, if you have no idea about above items hire a professional inspector

  • Ps. Evos are such great cars even as stock, why dont you just get a nice clean stock one?

    • wish i could find one in the colour i want

  • thanks for ur reply guys ive decided im going to go look at it and pay for compression test to see how healthy engine is

  • Good choice on the EVO 9 but as others have pointed out it's probably been thrashed as with most other JDM cars on the market (very sad). Some say it's the 'real last EVO' 😂😂😂.

    • yeah ohwell 265 kw on 18 psi put a deposit picking up monday lol
test drove fine checked for rust and stuff all goods

      • Send pics.

      • But you said he didn't have paperwork… How do you now have the power output?

  • If you have to ask here, you are not the right person for the vehicle. That sort of question belongs to a long time member of an evo forum.

    • ur an evo forum
