Home Security Monitoring Setup?

Basic Home Theft setup.

So, i have this recurring thing where i move close to where i work. Usually 1-2mins away via motorcycle.

Previously, when i had smaller places and a proper desktop machine that was on 24x7, i used to just hook a webcam up to point at the door and use software to detect movement and then take video + email me snaps instantly and upload to external server.

The idea being i get alerted, and im calling the cops and within 2minutes i'm in someones face. Although it was never needed, this had worked perfectly for my peace of mind, knock on wood.

What is the go these days for that kind of setup but obviously bit more updated? remote app control would be nice for instance.

Although I'll likely have a NAS/media center in the same placement vicinity soon, I'd prefer not to have it attached to a dedicated server or other software be required.

Is this doable these days in a single unit, what are the power options like? ideally something with a battery over wifi would be nice, but tethered powers not a huge issue i suppose, just changes my placement option strategy a bit.

  • Those requirements sound rather familiar :)

There are plenty of off-the-shelf units that will probably tick all the boxes as per your description, not sure about the battery backup though. Personally I didn't like the idea of having to use proprietary software to access my feed so I built my own even though that meant taking on most of the heavy lifting myself.

If that's not for you there seem to be deals popping up here fairly regularly for this sort of thing - if you do a quick search for 'IP Camera' that should get you started.

  • PTZ Camera/Baby monitor works like a treat!

Btw, I am not affiliated by this link. e.g only!

Wireless and mount it anywhere around the house! Use an app on your phone to monitor live and it also has all the bells an whistles. You can even listen and talk through it.

Furthermore Pan/Tilt and Zoom, record on the phone, snapshot and motion detection.

Nothing needed, apart from a power point, wireless router/modem/internet connection.

I believe that NAS drive companies want you to spend $$$ for a licence to have multiple cameras …. eg. QNAP

    Cheers
