Recover Data from 2013 MacBook Air SSD

Hi guys,

I have a faulty 2013 Macbook air, decided not to repair since the repair cost is too high.
asked the genius store to take out the SSD for me and hope to connect it to an external case to recover some data files.

However, after doing some research, I am socked that a external case or even USB connector for the SSD (12+16 pin) is not cheap…..:(

was hoping to get around by getting some adaptors and found the 12+16 pin SSD to M.2 NGFF (M key) for around 10 dollars. but I can't seem to find any M.2 NGFF (M key) to USB connection (most only accept type B or B+M).

Hoping for any advice and recommendation, thank you so much

  • A PCI M.2 NGFF adapter is cheap - you can put this in any windows PC then.

    • thanks for the reply, but I am a bit confused, can you elaborate please?
I found a 12+16 pin SSD to M2 NGFF (type M), but can't seem to find the type M connector to others

        • cool is there a way to connect No.2 straight to a laptop via USB?

        • @t0087669: Nope, you would need a NGFF M to USB adapter instead. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/401327618386

        • so I just connect it to any motherboard of a PC? will windows able to the files? or does it have to have Linux or something?

          Thanks for your help

        • @t0087669:

Mac disks are formatted differently to PC disks. Most likely your PC will see it is there, but not be able to read files without additional software for reading "HFS+" formatted disks.

To read on a PC you'll probably need something like: https://www.paragon-software.com/home/hfs-windows/

Linux might be another option - there's probably a free/open source solution for linux, but I'm sorry, I am not familiar enough to suggest anything.

If you were able to come to Rosanna I might be able to help.

        • @pinchies: Windows won't see the drive nor can it read HFS+ file system by default, but I've used Paragon for Windows to read Mac drives with success as pinchies has suggested. Did this via Bootcamp on Windows to read my Mac partition.

Also if you have FileVault (full disk encryption) turned on for the Mac Drive it may cause some more headaches to work around.

I bought for $8 from Germany via ebay - an adapter from the 12.6 to sata. Hwoever I bought three different type for the 2013 model until I got the correct one. If you have identified the ssd as a 12.6, then you should be ok, just count the little gold fingers on the drive to confirm you have 12 and 6.

Then I used an old usb to sata adapter from an external hdd caddy, and plugged into another mac so I could recover data files.
