How to set up NBN

Hi there,

Is there anyone know how to setup NBN? I have signed up my service a week ago and received all the information. However, I couldn't make it work in the last 4 days.

  1. I got fiber cable comes to the premise.
  2. I got D-Link Python DSL 2888A.
  3. My port is UNI-D 2.
  4. I am with Hello Broadband provider

I connect UNI-D 2 port with the WAN port using network cable. After that, I went through setup wizard and select PPPoE as my connection type. I filled in the username ([email protected]) and password. I clicked on the save button and finished the setup.

After the setup, the optical light is flashing sometimes and stop for a while and keep continue. The UNI-D2 got orange colours and flashing sometimes but less than the optical light.

I have waited for more than 5 mins but nothing happen.

I have called their technical support and they want to have someone to come to check the NBN box which will cost me $200 if there is no faulty. The NBN box is look fine for me because all the lights are on and they look functioning. Also, even if there is nothing wrong, they don't help me to setup the router either. I may end up paying $200 and not get the job done.

If I quit the service then they will charge me for $240.

Can anyone help me please? Thank you very much in advance

    Hi,

There should be 2 hardware devices.
    1. The NBN Modem
    2. Your D-Link Python DSL 2888A

Your NBN Modem WAN port connects to your D-Link Python DSL router.
If your WAN port is connected to a patch port (on the wall), then there must be a patch port on the other end somewhere in your house.
You should then connect the WAN patch port (on the wall) to your D-Link Python DSL WAN port. Then connect any of the LAN port from the D-Link router to your Laptop/PC.

If there is not a patch port (on the wall) where the NBN modem is, you can connect your NBN Modem WAN port directly to your D-Link Python DSL WAN Port.

I recommend resetting your D-Link to factory default first and try to connect to see if it works or have stable green lights on the D-Link router, if not go through the setup wizard on your D-Link router.

Let me know how you go. =)

    • It is fiber cable which doesn't need VLAN tagging or VDSL?

      • no you shouldn't need any VLAN tagging or VDSL setup at all. The information should already been gathered from your ISP.
All you need to do is plug it in correctly.

Did you plug the cord from the NBN box into the WAN port on your D-Link Python DSL 2888A
If so make sure you have gone through the setup with WAN Access type: Residential Gateway (or something like that) NOT VDSL and NOT ADSL

I had a look and the quick start guide for that product is for ADSL only.

    Use http://files.dlink.com.au/products/DSL-2888A/Manuals/DSL-2888A_T1_Manual_v1.00(WW).pdf page 30

Enable VLAN Tagging with an ID of 100 and a priority of 0.

    • I went through setup wizard and it selected Resedential Gateway but default. I will try to set the VLAN Tagging tonight. And yes, I plugged into WAN port

    • After I set VLAN tagging to 100 and priority of 10, the optical light on NBN box not flashing. The UNI-D2 light is flashing sometimes. But still no internet access :(

      • Did you set it to 0 or 10? It should be 0. Otherwise I've seen some ISPs no longer require it when they previously did.
        Try disabling VLAN Tagging.
UNI-D2 flashing means there is activity.

  • reset your modem, try using the wizard but let it find the information itself , you shouldn't need to answer anything as its designed to get the info from the isp.

That's what I did for internode any way.

    • I did and nothing happen. The optical light keeps flashing and stop and keep continue like that

  • My optical is always flashing so that's normal. I use uni1 ands it's always on (unless I unplug my modem router off course)

When my NBN was setup, I had lots of issues getting working, I rang internode several times. then I asked how do they know its actually activated and then they noticed NBN hadn't set it up on there end. Id hit up your support and ask them to confirm NBN have you connected on there side.

U can connect your laptop directly into the Uni d port however u need to set up a new network connection and I cannot remember how to do it, but your support should help. That way u can at least tell if it works or not at all.

    • When I asked them how to do the setup to my PC, they asked me to google the instruction. They refused to help me. They want to send a technician here which I know I will end up paying $200 for nothing because the technician only check for cable and NBN box. They won't help me to make the service work. As an ozbargain I don't know to spend that money. But I can't exit the contract either. I don't know what I can do. There is no cooling off period.

  • Connect your PC directly to the NTD's UNI-D 2 (bypassing the router). On your PC, create a new PPPoE connection on your computer. If it is not connecting, see what error message is given and troubleshoot from that.

    • Hi Trex, thank you for your suggestion. I have done that and I get error 651. I have turned off all firewall and anti virus software but I still get the same error.

  • I decided to:
    - Send an email to complain and request to cancelled my service without paying existing fee
    - Logged complain to OIT
    - Cancelled my credit card
    - Signed up with a new provider

    • Fair enough, it sounds like horrible service.

  • Thanks guy. I got a call from Hello Broadband manager today and he said he will cancel the service without any charges.

  • so with the new provider, does NBN work now?

    • Yes, it's work perfect. They just activate it yesterday
