Why are people asking so many dumb questions lately?

Specifically the questions around cars. Do people not know how to use Google effectively?

Why are people asking so many dumb questions lately?

    Why can't you Google that?

    I got 7.3 million results.

  • +4

Some of the questions I've seen here makes me think that Google must be broken.

  • +15

Best to treat the Ozbargain forums lightly; you'll find a lot of users here aren't particularly intelligent nor are they internet-savvy (heck, some users don't even know how to press the reply button).

There's always Quora and other sites if you're after coherent discussions.

    • +4

you'll find a lot of users here aren't particularly intelligent

but have other redeeming qualities which make them worthy lovable human beings. 🙃

    • Re not replying:

I have only been with OzB about 12 months. I don't go to the website very much, just browse the daily email.

I don't have time to sift through the listings on the site.

I look at discussions that catch my eye. I have found that you are not notified if there is a reply to your response. When I have posted, I have had trouble even finding the post to see the comments.

Yes some discussions I have commented on come up at the bottom of the email, but it is very hard to see replies to your comments or takes lots of scrolling to find the new replies. Perhaps I just don't know the tricks.

Perhaps notifications would help people follow thread easier and then reply to your comments if they wish.

      • +5

You should be notified for replies with a on-screen notification on the bottom right + the bell (top of screen) hence how I found your reply.

      • If you hover over 'My Account' in the top bar while logged in, there's links to posts and comments you have made (or use the hamburger menu in the top left on mobile).

As my former boss said. "There's no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid people".

    • -3

I think adding that last part kind of reverses the desired effect of that statement though. Since you tell people "There's no such thing as a stupid question" to encourage them to ask questions - no matter how easy - because you would prefer them to know rather than to pretend to know, possibly causing issues later.

Adding "just stupid people", kind of loops back and implies the person asking the simple question is stupid and discourages anyone from asking.

      • +1

I think your 'smart arse boss' detector is broken.

    • Did we have the same boss? Haha

    my fav is :
"do you know if xxxx will become cheaper in xxx ?"

    i always said:
"wait till Crystal ball deal come up and i will buy and use it to answer your question"

    • +6

Will the Crystal Ball deal be as good as last time and can I get Cash Rewards?

      • +11

        shakes crystall ball "doubtful"

      • +1

no crystal ball can tell you that! need to wait for dragon balls deal instead! dragon lord can grant any wishes

    • yes

    • It is actually not as 'dumb' as you think to ask Do you know when X will be cheaper?. Based on our collective bargain experience our advice may be "Wait for the Stock-take sales in July" or "Coupons for 40% discount on that is not uncommon - wait a bit".

Apps like Hopper also exist for these reasons. Hopper gives you advice to buy or wait for airline tickets based on historic data - they will let you know what prices are like for each date you may book and when to buy.

  • +7

I think I know the answer, there is no emotional connection from google so people rather ask questions here and wait :)

    • +1

No emotional connection? Have you been using Google correctly? The downright sass it projects when you spell something wrong!

  • +14

I think people are becoming more desperate for real-time human opinions due to the explosion in "fake news".

You can google just about anything, and you'll find information that looks legit, but it may just be a paid advertisement.

    • +6

Part of it is exactly this - personal experience trumps most of the results found online. Considering how easy it is to 'fake' a review - I've grown skeptical of almost everything and then go and verify in person if I can.

THE INTERNETS HAS MADE ME A CYNIC.

      • +10

Hmmm, how do we know musicinbed69 isn't getting paid to say that?
He could be building trust within the community, then he'll force us to buy a Fidget Cube or something…

        • +8

Don't be ridiculous, we as a community are far too savvy to succumb to that sort of charade.

Sent from my Lenovo ThinkPad E570p

    • If you can't differ "fake" from whats real, you shouldn't be on internet.
I still can tell someone, you can drill a hole in iphone 6 to add a headphone jack in a forum and some idiot will believe me :)

      • Oh my god are you serious?! What an amazing feature for DIY enthusiasts! Thank god for all those deals on drills we've had in the past!

  • Cause there are many dumb people, who have many dumb questions.

    • +6

And even more people waiting to write a dumb answer.

  • +4

Why can't we down vote banal questions so I don't have to see them on the front page?

  • +1

stupid questions are easier to answer… : D

  • -1

I thinking not any too many to days FRIday

  • +7

    I think it's:

People could Google it, but that would give answers like x car is the best value car.
An Ozbargainer would say y car is the best value car, for Ozbargainer reasons.

    • +2

Definately agree with this. Personal experience I have had is if you are looking to buy a small car, all the reviews tell you to get a Mazda 3 or VW Golf. I don't disagree that they are great cars if you are going to spend $30k rrp on a new car.

For most people though, picking up a demo i30/Cerato/Lancer will do 9/10ths of the job at half the price, and then be more reliable and cost less to service and insure, which aren't really measured in reviews. You may not even realise this without asking the question.

    What a dumb question.

  • +1

"Why are people asking so many dumb questions lately?"

On OzBargain, I've thought this also the past week or so, but only thought it.

  • It's all right asking dumb questions, some might say there is no such thing. But I kind of agree looking over the main page there are lots of questions and discussions that should probably be better off sticking to their own unique niche.

  • One of many "dumb" question makes it to the front page with pure luck - they might just have wanted the "Ozb" opinion.

This causes drama and gets more activity in the forums for other people to go in and find all the other easily googleable questions and then flame them which raises the popularity of the thread.
It also opens the door for other people to post more questions that might be considered simple which gets attention from the haters who will flame the question and accuse troll bumping it to the front page.
Then the actual trolls come in and try to make the front page using this method to trigger people.

    It's a vicious cycle.

    What should I drink?

  • and surprisingly, these posts get really hot, more than 100 comments normally!

  • -1

people get fired over asking dumb questions.

    • +2

They promote them where i work. normally because the honest answer is worse than the question itself.

      • what company do you work for

  • May be this is a dumb question in itself?

  • +1

Wow. I was literally asking this exact question at work on Friday. 3 stupid questions about cars lol.
Ironically, this stupid question is also on the front page.
So 4 stupid questions + a useful AMA from the accountant.

  • As part of my community order I'm required to also participate within society.

I suppose what one has to ask, really, is what came first; the chicken or the rooster? I have always personally advocated that it was indeed the rooster that came first; all over the chicken's beak, in fact.
