Premium Car Insurance - RACV Alternatives?

Currently I am using RACV as my main insurance provider. I like the fact that they allow you to choose your own repairer in the event of accident, unlike some provider that you have to use their 'recommended repairer'. This resonates with me because some insurance demands their repairer to find OEM or 2nd hand parts instead of genuine parts. But like a normal OzBargainer, I'm looking for a bargain and with 1st July coming - I wanted to save a few bucks! :)

So here's a question. Any other provider that allows claimant to use their own repairer that I can consider?

  • I have a 5 year old skoda. I was with RACV until this year when they decided to increase the premium despite no claims stating the it's much more expensive to repair a old car. RACV has been quite good in the past for me. Once my car was broken into and RACV covered all costs without any excess and allowed me to retain my no claim bonus despite police stating they won't be able to do anything and even refused to look at the car.
I have now switched to shannons which was cheaper than racv. Shannons allows you to choose your preferred repairer and are not the cheapest option. My second car (Holden commodore) is still with racv as shannons was more expensive for this one.

  • Maybe look at increasing your premium and lower your cost/outlay if you think your driving is good, takes approximately 3 years to break even but it is a risk.
