Getting Sucked in by EOFY Car Deals, Ute

Hi all,
Bit of background. I'm wanting a 4x4 ute to drive 700km to & from work every week, able to carry stock & machinery in tray & good to go offroading & camping with.
Orginally I had a look between the BT50, Dmax & Hilux & after comparing the specs, price & test driving, I'm fangirling a tad on the Hilux SR5.
In terms or resale/trade in value, the hilux seems to hold quite well & tbh the 2015+ models are marked around the $50k mark or more from my searches. I had looked at secondhand, but the promo seems like a pretty good deal.
Toyota is currently doing a promo for $56990 for the Top of the range SR5 with leather seats, tow receiver, sports bar, tub liner. Which is approx $5k more than the other 2 models, but they don't have the extras (tow & tub liner is a must).
I'd be looking at getting carpets, soft cover, bull bar (free with primary producers) & perhaps tinting thrown in.

My question, I've got a few days to set the deal before I fly out, am I just getting sucked into the EOFY craziness? Is this a good deal? I'm trying to find historical data on it, but am failing!

Help! Any & all advice appreciated.

Hi Mate i would recomend that you a quick search on redbook or glassguide to see what the resale value is for each vechicle.

    Just keep in mind these things;
    1. Depreciation is the real killer in any car.(you can find this % in back of any wheels magazine for new cars)
    2. Look at the total operting cost for each vechicle, the diffrence my suprise you (nrma operating cost calculator)
    2. Cars with good brand awareness/reputations are easier to sell. (Toyota vs Isuzu)
    3. Additional cosmetic accessory are almost irrelevant to resale of a vehicle. (sometimes it is better value to buy base model and add the aftermarket parts)

Lastly have a look at youtube channel - Auto Expert by John Cadogan. Simple no BS advice.

    • Thanks mate! I'll definitely have to sit down & calculate before going ahead! I had a look at John cadogan, he seems awesome!
Part of me is super chicken to haggle, especially for EOFY & their supposed 'deals' right now. Rationally I know they're making margins, but it's sooo hard to get their price down!😔

700km per week. I wouldn't worry about resale value but what running costs are less and what your outlay is.

  • If it's not delivered before June 30 you're not going to get much more of a discount

    • What do you mean? /:

  • EOFY craziness

  • I have been looking at the Holden Colorado.

5 year warranty, 5 years roadside assist, 3 years free servicing (9 month service interval so thats 4 services).

I want a lot of accessories - rear steel step, tub liner, tow bar, canopy, all weather floor mats (front + rear).

I can get a good deal on any of the base cars, but they dont budge at all on the accessories and my accessories are worth something like $7,700.

Was hoping they would release a STORM edition as it normally comes with the rear step, tow bar and a few other things I dont really need included.

    • I just had a quick perve at the colorado! I have driven it at work & tbh I wasn't too impressed, but having a look on the website the features are quite enticing. i do like the front sensors, heated leather seats, lane diversion & other odd bits. It is a few $ks more than Hilux though, but then again the 5 yrs promos does help to lessen the gap!

        • Toyota has the resale that the Colorado doesn't
        • Colorado has more features
        • Toyota has much cheaper Capped Price Servicing (which is still more expensive than the free servicing on the Colorado lol)
        • Colorado has a higher rated tow amount.

As a salesman of both I really think its gonna be subjective. Try both. LTZ would be more comparable to the SR5 not the Z71.

And SR5 doesn't come standard with leather. TRD does

        • Spackbace, do you mind me asking you as an insider,
Since it is EOFY, can I actually get the price any lower?
If not, what extras can you usually throw in?

        • @tingleping:

Extras = price reduced anyway ;)

Max you could try for would be $2k, not sure if there is quite that much tho. Worth a shot at this time of year

  • EOFY craziness - My experience has been cars aren't much cheaper in June. You can get a similar price any time of year - just need to keep an eye out for different promos like "free auto" or "$1000 gift card". That's the best time to buy, rather than when they have a 0% finance offer.

    • To my knowledge (maybe because I haven't noticed) I didnt know they were doing 0% finance, I'm more focused on the extra benefits (tow, sports bar &c.) & free on road costs. I know it's hard for them to budge on price at this time which is why I'm curious as to whether or not this is a pre set sales jib

  • Update: I went with the Ranger XLT, ha XD
