Big W Canvas Print of Hubble Deep Field Photo

Hi all,

I am hoping to print a 60x60cm canvas from Big W of the following image:

https://www.spacetelescope.org/images/heic0406a/

I have never had a canvas print done before and was just looking for input from people regarding whether this image would work or not?

I am thinking the finished product may not end up showing all the finer details of the photo and that it might be too dark, but any input is appreciated.

Thanks :)

  • I have done canvas prints from BigW before. On the upside, canvas itself is "rough" and hides some impurities of the photo. It also does good black levels generally. The downside is, BigW's photo portal downsamples photos to 4000 x 3000, last time I checked. At 60cm, it means you may only get 127dpi in one direction. On canvas, that may be just enough, but it's not great.

    • Thanks for the reply! Would 40x40 work out ok do you think?

      • 40cm is 15.75 inch. I do not know how BigW would resize a square photo, but assuming the worse you get 3000 pixels in one dimention. 3000/15.75=190dpi (pixels/dots per inch). So that should be fine on Canvas.

      • BTW, if you upload a photo, you can check what its new dimensions are, to see how it has been resized. Keep in mind that in addition to resizing, they also recompress, which can kill some of the sharpness.

        • ok thanks! I might just stick to 40x40 and see how that turns out then

    • 127dpi should be enough, given the texture pitch of the canvas. My main concern would be the deep blacks seeping into the stars/galaxies.

I printed out the Apollo 8 Earthrise photo on canvas and it came out very nicely.

If you have the choice, try matte blacks instead of glossy black, as the image will be quite reflective with all the black.

      • What size did you get? From BigW?

Not sure if they offer a choice of matte/glossy

        • No, Officeworks. I got a big poster size, maybe 1.3x1m - I needed to crop the square image to fit.

        • @RedHab:

Ok thanks. Any idea if officeworks downsamples too?

  • The particular image you linked is only 712 x 712 pixels.

But you can get a higher resolution of the same image which may help. Try here:

    • +2

There are other links on the Space Telescope page. There's a 110 megabyte full size original available to download as well as other resolutions.

      • It doesn't matter though does it? Based on the above comments regarding the downsampling

      • Well if the OP is going to use the Big W photo portal then there's no point in downloading the highest quality version. I was just pointing out that higher resolutions than 712 x 712 were available on the Space Telescope site without having to find the image via Google.
